It has been my dream to visit Madagascar since I was four years old. When I first saw pictures from my grandparents’ trips to the island nation off Africa’s east coast, I immediately fell in love with its animals and beautiful environment. It was so unique and I absolutely loved it. 

When I looked up information about Madagascar, I wasn’t surprised to find facts such as approximately 95 percent of Madagascar's reptiles, 89 percent of its plant life, and 92 percent of its mammals exist nowhere else on Earth. But I was really surprised and sad to discover that 82% of children under the age of 18 are living below the poverty line and 14.2% of children in Madagascar have never attended school. 

When I saw this info I was shocked. I knew the people there needed help and I wanted to give it to them. The pictures below were taken by our friends from Madagascar. When I told them that I wanted to help a cause in Madagascar, they were happy to suggest a little school near the city of Toliara, on the west coast. The school is almost down to ruins. The buildings are just four concrete walls, and school supplies are very limited. 

Classrooms for children should be walls filled with color and enough fun markers and crayons to color with, and desks for kids to sit at and not the floor, or even a nice chalkboard. This school doesn't have any of that. I want to give these kids an amazing, fun school experience.
