MADE IN NICARAGUA

I would like to tell you about an important project that is currently in need of your generous support. As many of you might know, our country, Nicaragua, has been undergoing an unprecedented social upheaval. In mid-April of last year, peaceful civilian riots turned into terrifying confrontations with local police as government authorities tried to muzzle the right of the people to protest civically. What ensued in the coming months has been denounced the world over and has brought the country to a stand still. Although oppressive attacks and violence have decreased some over the last few months, the climate here is unpredictable and disconcerting. It is still too early to know what the outcome of this crisis will be, but it is our hope that democracy and freedom will ultimately be restored. In the meantime, our economy is literally paralyzed and the future is very uncertain for most of us.

My name is Gabriel Traversari and I am a TV anchor, journalist, writer and producer. I am of Nicaraguan descent but have spent most of my life in the United States. It was a little over a decade ago that I decided to return to my mother´s homeland in the hopes of contributing to its cultural growth, projecting its local talent and showcasing the beauty and diversity of my country in various promotional platforms, mostly through TV specials and books. I love this place and, until this recent impasse, had planned to continue creating venues to further this very personal commitment. I had already begun my next project, an amazing coffee table book entitled MADE IN NICARAGUA, showcasing 100 remarkable and inspirational Nicaraguan personalities that have left a mark in the world and are known far beyond our national boundaries, when this crisis exploded. The purpose of this book is to inspire our younger generations to dream and aim high. Since arriving here I have noticed how very important it is for young people to feel motivated, to develop a sense of identity, to have “contemporary heroes” to look up to and emulate. The morale here is pretty darn low, as is the local self-esteem. I have worked tirelessly to give young barrio kids a “break”, provide them with a voice and permit them the essential and indispensable opportunity to express themselves creatively and with genuine passion.

Some years back I was responsible for jump starting our moribund music industry. I created a musical group that would eventually become a huge local sensation and lead to a renaissance of urban and pop trends that resonated with young listeners and even adults. For at least 5 years we managed to break myths and turn national singers into national stars, something never before seen in our country. I created the first ever Nicaraguan Music Awards and the Central American Music Conference with the hopes of giving these talented individuals an opportunity to learn and commune with important industry players. For a while our efforts payed off and the future seemed bright and hopeful, but, as is usually the case here, the sustainability of our collective work lasted only a short while. That said, I am as faithful as ever about our future, which is why I remain here.

MADE IN NICARAGUA is destined to become a huge and well received success. Its content and message will surely resonate with Nicaraguans, but it will also be appealing to those who know little about our culture and the quality of our people. The most amazing part of this particular work for me has been to discover just how many outstanding denizens from my country exist the world over and to learn about their individual achievements. This sense of pride will certainly be a sentiment shared by our readers in Nicaragua and beyond. Precisely because of the debacle we face and the negative repercussions that such instability has had on our image and reputability abroad, it is that much more indispensable to complete the task at hand. Now more than ever we must remind peple about the honorable aspects of our national character and the virtues of our race.  I am commited to this and I will not waver from my vision.

So, where do we stand with the project?

I have miraculously managed to complete the book, despite financial and logistical hurdles and very little support. The final product is quite beautiful and likely to impact in a very positive way. Still, I face new dilemas. Because no one here is able to further support the making of the book,  I must continue searching for alternate ways to finance the final stages of the project, more specifically, the printing of the manuscript.  Luxury books are expensive undertakings and to have come this far is an amazing feat in itself, but it would be a shame not to conclude what we started.

We have decided to extend a participatory invitation to people outside of Nicaragua, sensitive folk who might very well understand why completing this book is so necessary, especially considering the hardships we have been dealt recently. We have no doubt that there will be an imminent resolution to our socio-political dilema and we predict it will happen before the year is over, and when that day comes, our book will serve as a complementary piece to that important historical landmark. Before that, however, we are commited to launching the book in the US and other countries. Should we manage to garner a substantial profit from book sales, a percentage of the proceeds could also be channeled to serve cultural projects in Nicaragua that are currently and completely paralyzed.

Won´t you please help us complete our budgetary commitments and become part of our history? We are now short over $5,000 dollars (of a project estimated at $40,000), the amount needed to print at least a limited first edition. That is all we need to make our dream a tangible reality. Your contributions can be personal, or we can include the logo of your company, if you wish. If personal, we will include your name inside the book, as follows:

$100-500 dollar contributions: your name will be included in the final pages of the book in a space created specifically for donors.

$1,000 dollar contributions: your name will occupy the top positions on our donor page, plus we will give you 3 signed complementary copies of the book.

To be able to include logos, the contributions must be over $2,500 dollars:

$2,500 dollar contributions: your name, or the logo of your company will be included in the first pages of the book, after the page devoted to the main sponsor of the book.  Plus 5 signed complementary copies of the book.

$5,000 dollar contributions: your name, or the logo of your company will be included in the first pages of the book, after the page devoted to the main sponsor of the book and above the $2,500 donors. Plus 10 signed complementary copies of the book.

All donors will be special guests at our various presentations in the US and Nicaragua.

The book has been written bilingually, in Spanish and English.

I truly thank you for reading this. As I observe my country find its way out of this horrifying labyrinth, I stand hopeful and optimistic. I also will continue to relentlessly find ways to finish my project. If there is something that I am known for is my resilience and determination, a quality I share with my Nicaraguan brethren.

Let me know if we can count on your support.

Very sincerely,

Gabriel Traversari
