My name is Maddy. I'm physically disabled and use a wheelchair, requiring assistance with activities of daily living. I live in a group home, and my living expenses and care are paid for by Social Security and waived services. I was adopted in 2010 when I was five. My adoptive father has died, and I'm estranged from my mother. My stability was shattered in December 2023 when the county removed me from my father’s care due to maltreatment. After temporarily living with my older sister, I had to move out by the end of April 2024 and transitioned into a group home setting. I'm now receiving support from a disability case manager.
I was told I lost my housing benefits (GRH) starting in June 2025 because I couldn't provide a state ID or proof of SSI application in time. Although my GRH benefits have since been restored, this shows how unstable my housing funding is without proper documentation. GRH will cover housing costs from September 2025 and moving forward. GRH will not reimburse housing costs for the months of June, July, and August 2025, which totals $3,554.
I attempted to get my state ID before the GRH deadline, but I was unable to because I didn't have the proper documentation, as it got lost from moving. While I have since obtained a new Social Security card and my father’s death certificate, I cannot complete my application for Social Security (SS) survivor benefits because I don't have documentation.
