Maddox is my one year old Siberian husky puppy. I got Maddox when he was just 8 weeks old, and I have raised him since. Just before his first birthday, some cloudiness appeared in his right eye, so I decided to take him to the vet. The veterinarian was unsure what was wrong, so she referred me to UGA's vet school to see an ophthalmologist. It turns out that Maddox has hereditary juvenile cataracts forming in both of his eyes, and they are causing him to rapidly lose his vision. The cataract in his right eye has matured to the point of leaving him blind in that eye, however the left eye's cataract is not fully mature which has left him with some sight.
At the first visit, we learned that the intraocular pressure in Maddox's eyes was very high which would not make him a candidate for cataract surgery. He was given medication to help lower the pressure in the hopes that by the following week his eyes would improve. At the follow up appointment we discovered that the pressure in his eyes had decreased to a normal level which made Maddox a candidate for the cataract surgery. Without this surgery, Maddox's eyes will continue to worsen and could eventually lead to numerous other problems including glaucoma, retinal detachment, and permanent vision loss which would require removal of one or both of his eyes. The only option is to surgically remove the cataracts as there are no medications to cure cataracts or reverse their development. The surgery would have to be done within the next few months and would cost about $5000.
Unfortunately this was an unexpected complication and I am unable to afford this surgery. Any donations that can help me save Maddox and keep him by my side would mean the world to me, my family, and everyone who knows Maddox. Thank you for your love and support. And please share to help better Maddox's chance for surgery!
