This is Maddie.
Maddie and her big brother Tyson have very complex heart conditions. Tyson has undergone five open heart surgeries in his ten short years, the first just after his birth.
Maddie, who has just turned 5, is due to have her third open heart surgery in February next year. As with Tyson, her first operation was just after she was born.
Maddie, her mum, two brothers, and grandma and poppy live in a rental property at Wonga Beach, an hour and a half's drive from Cairns. Every time one of the kids has needed surgery or any sort of medical intervention, they have had to travel down to Brisbane. Maddie's third surgery in December will be done at Brisbane's Lady Cilento Hospital in Woolloongabba.
Up until now, Maddie's family has funded their travel and accommodation needs for each of the two kids' many hospital visits and surgeries, which in many instances required extended stays in intensive care and therefore the need for long-stay accommodation for the family close to the hospital.
Maddie's mum Sharna is a single mum. She owns a small hairdressing business in Mossman, however, this is running at a loss. Sharna has no more financial resources to draw on and with Maddie's surgery fast approaching she is overwhelmed and needs help. Sharna's parents (Maddie's grandparents) and family have provided all they can financially, to the point where they have had to sell their property. Sharna and her parents are all on casual wages and will have no income while they are in Brisbane for Maddie's surgery.
We need your help.
A local organisation 'KIND' has offered to contribute to the cost of Maddie's and her brothers' flights to Brisbane, however, this still needs to be paid upfront. In addition, the family needs to pay for:
* flights for Sharna and her parents (to look after the boys);
* accommodation close to the Lady Cilento Hospital for the duration of Maddie's stay in hospital, which could be for up to 5 weeks. Given its inner city location, accommodation can cost up to $250 a night and while some of this is covered when Sharna and Maddie are staying in the room, the out of pocket expense quickly adds up;
* expenses for the hairdressing salon, which still need to be paid despite it being shut while Sharna is away; and
* food and general living costs for the family while they are down for the surgery.
Sharna's extended family in Brisbane will be doing everything we can while she and her family are here to help them, but with none of us living close to the hospital, Sharna will still have to pay for the expenses listed above.
Maddie and her family have faced many years of incredible stress and hardship. Your donation will help alleviate that and will allow Maddie to have the life-saving surgery she needs.
