Maddie's Road To Recovery - FROM MAINE TO SHRINERS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL - BOSTONOn Saturday, May 19th, in an unfortunate accident at home, Maddison caught her hand in a treadmill. She suffered a severe injury to her left hand and sustained full thickness burns to her index and middle fingers, leaving bone and tendons exposed.
Maddison is a third-grade student at Biddeford Primary School. She lives with her parents, Ryan and Emily, and her three-year old brother Hunter, in Biddeford, Maine. She’s a great softball player and loves her two cats and her dog, Barkley.
She was rushed to Southern Maine Medical Center’s ER, where she was immediately treated to avoid infection. After she was released with her hand fully wrapped, she remained in good spirits, still smiling and laughing with everyone around her.
On Monday morning, she was referred to Shriners Children’s Hospital, a highly specialized pediatric surgical hospital in downtown Boston. It is one of the world’s preeminent hospitals for the treatment of children with burns.
She and her Mom met with a team of Shriners physicians, surgeons, physical therapists and other medical experts to discuss treatment and the long road to recovery.
Maddison was a trooper during her checkup and never lost her charm. She and her Mom will be making weekly trips to Shriners Hospital. In four to six weeks, Maddison will begin a series of skin graft surgeries and recovery will take years.
Regrettably, Maddie’s softball season is over, but she has already made plans to suit up and cheer on her teammates for the remainder of their season. We’re all praying for a miracle and hope these treatments will help Maddison regain full mobility in her hand, so she can play softball again soon.
Although it will be a difficult journey to for her and her family, Maddie’s optimism and positive attitude will do wonders for her recovery. The expense for weekly travel to Boston, overnight stays and medical supplies will be costly for the family. Any help will take them a long way down Maddie's Road To Recovery.
