Hi Everyone,
We've been going through a tough few weeks... On 12/29 (Madden's 11th Birthday), we found out Lexie had sarcoma. After a series of tests and scans, she was in the operating room by 1/22. She went through a mildly invasive surgery that was considered standard, but still left her with a over 20 staples down her belly. We found out it was a low grade cancer.. but more likely than not, we will have to continue her on radiation.

On 1/24 Madden had stopped walking. He had always had issues with his legs, getting worse whenever the weather got cold. We have been feeding him Cosequin along with meals for as long as we can remember. But this time was different.. he was walking with a limp by 1/21, when Lexie was hospitalized... and by 1/24 three of his legs were paralyzed. After a vet visit on Friday, 1/25  we found out his cervical spine was compressed, possibly being the root cause of his escalating paralysis. He was sent home with steroids and nerve medication, but the vet said if things got worse to take him to the ER immediately for MRIs.

Sure enough the next day, Saturday 1/26, he started developing muscle spasms in his front-right shoulder.. they were constant and when you looked at him all you could see was a cloudy confusion.. it was heart wrenching. We immediately took him to urgent care that evening only to have the vet tell us we were too late and that the MRIs would have to be done Monday morning. He would need to be hospitalized and monitored throughout Sunday as he was in a great deal of pain.  By Monday morning they will share results for MRIs and they added, "he is a confirmed candidate for surgery". Madden will most likely have to go through an invasive and risky spinal surgery shortly after his MRI on Monday.

It's been a heck of a week.

Anyone who knows us and our family knows that we are proud people... in fact it took a lot of long discussions to figure out if we even wanted to post this because it feels vulnerable to have everyone somehow be a part of this strange experience.. but we know a lot of you have shared in the joy of Madden and Lexie and love them like your own. They are the most lovable pups you'll ever find. Lexie, 10, very energetic and a little skiddish around males but when you win her heart it feels like nothing else. Madden, 11, with his warm eyes, who will come snuggle with you when he senses you've had a bad day.

The truth of the matter is, the bills have been high.. and we are only at the beginning.. Lexie's consultations, scans and surgery have come out to over $13,000 so far with a likelihood of radiation in the near future. Madden's recent vet visit and overnight stay has come out to $4000 so far, with MRIs and spinal surgery on the horizon.. It has been manageable and the costs are secondary to our hope that Madden and Lexie continue to live happy healthy lives. We are blessed to be surrounded by many who care and those who have heard their story are asking for ways to help or contribute. While we have no expectations, if you would like to give, every penny would be appreciated. During this critical time, we only ask that you please send Madden and Lexie your prayers and well wishes.

Thank you all so much for continuing to care and asking about our wellbeing. We really appreciate all of it.

Love,
Madden and Lexie's mamas and papas
