Madawaska is the original home of Maine's Acadians, who settled here in the land of the Wəlastəkwewiyik- also known as the Maliseet First Nation- and finally forged a home for themselves nearly half a century after Le Grand Derangement and decades of displacement.  The culture here is unique, historically a mixture of Acadian, Quebecois, American, and Irish settlers, who worked the area in farming, logging and paper-making. The language reflects that mixture,  developing into a style of French that is an amalgamation of French, Acadian, Quebecois, English and Native American.  That language and culture survives to this day, despite past attempts to destroy it.

Your generosity will help us make sure we continue to maintain what we have that no one else does. Even the smallest of donations will expand our efforts in the preservation of local history, culture and language.  Funds will mainly be used for repair and construction for historical buildings, the maintenance of the Acadian Memorial Cross Landing Site, the modernization of the museum experience, preservation of our French language, and for educational efforts.
