Hi Everyone,
I am writing this as a very concerned dog-aunt. My brother and his family just moved from an apartment into a new house in the Pasadena region this past weekend, he was very excited to finally have a backyard for his 8 month old Bernadoodle, Mackey. Unfortunately, over the past few days Mackey took interest in a shrub that was growing in the yard, and was caught eating the berries/leaves yesterday. The plant was soon identified as a Brunfelsia plant..more commonly known as yesterday, today and tomorrow plant. This plant is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and contains Brunfelsamidine, which is a neurotoxin that causes serious central nervous system side effects. Common effects from the ingestion of this plant is anxious behavior, hypersalivation, lethargy, incoordination, coughing, diarrhea, vomiting, and in severe cases tremors, seizures (that can last for for several days) and death. This plant thrives in warm climates and awareness needs to be brought to it for ALL dog owners!!!!!
Here is a photo of the plant - And a link to learn more
Since Mackey was rushed to the Animal hospital yesterday he has had multiple seizures and is being treated by supportive care (IV's for fluid, muscle relaxers and charcoal). The toxins unfortunately have spread to Mackey's blood, which caused acute liver failure. The vet thinks the best chance of a recovery would be for Mackey to undergo Dialysis, which would clean his blood of the toxins over the course of two days.
Mackey's treatment bills have grown extensively, and receiving any help would mean the world to our family. Please help if you can and share his story so we can bring awareness to this HIGHLY toxic plant.

Much love,
Kait, Mackey's Aunt
April 6th 2021 - UPDATE
Hi Everyone,
Mackey was released from the hospital the evening of April 3rd. He is home recovering with his mom and dad. He is on a few medications and his back legs are are a little wobbly, so he needs support from his parents to move around. However, each day he is getting stronger! He had a check up with his doctor on Monday April 5th, and he is expected to make a full recovery!!! Mackey's parents, family and friends are so grateful for your support, prayers and contributions. Here are some photos of Mackey at home recovering with his parents (his neck was shaved for the dialysis treatment). We love you Mackey!!!!
