Mackey’s Journey Before & After a Lung Transplant

$1 or $10, ANYTHING will be helpful and is appreciated!  Thank you!

You may know him as your long-time hometown plumber, Robert Mackey of Mackey Plumbing! And he was still serving you, all of the way up until, August 2020, when he contracted COVID-19. He was living life as usual with the exception of becoming short of air from time to time. He had previously been diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis from exposure to asbestos, but he was stable. In August he presented to the Emergency Room and was hospitalized with COVID. He was in bad shape! He stayed there for 3 weeks with no family by his side. #NoVisitorPolicy. Many have experienced the pain of this scenario. He was in the ICU on 17 liters of oxygen with a booster. But God kept him off of the ventilator and brought him home!

He was thankful to be home, but he struggled. If you know him, you know he doesn’t sit still! But he didn’t have a choice. With the loss of his wife in February 2020, being stuck in those walls was something we can’t imagine, but we got glimpses of what it was like for him. He was stable, but still struggled greatly with his breathing. He couldn’t do anything except stay in his chair.

Within a handful of weeks, he ended up in the hospital again! They determined at that point he needed a consultation for a lung transplant. He was transferred to a rehab facility and later sent home to follow up with Pulmonology to begin the process. Since discharge we have been following up with physicians and doing lots of testing in preparation for the transplant. He is now under the care of the wonderful, UK Transplant Team and we have quite the journey ahead!

Because of COVID, Robert was forced into early retirement, as he became unable to do anything. The transplant process from now until 12-72 months after will be very costly. He has health insurance, but insurance will not cover all related expenses. We are not sure what all of his expenses will be, but by creating this fund, we can help prevent any financial burdens or strain so that he can focus on what matters…..getting strong without stress!

Many have asked to help in some way. Thank you! Your love and prayers have been a huge blessing and are greatly appreciated! Some have inquired if they can donate money because they have been through similar situations and they know that monetary donations would be a blessing. So, we decided to create this fund. If you are able and would like to give towards this fund to support him and all that this journey entails, you can give here! May God bless you for giving of your thoughts and prayers, and for giving monetary donations as well.

Robert is doing better. He can now walk to the bathroom and bathe himself. He can feed himself and is fully functional in his mind. His lungs just simply prevent him from doing more than “just enough,” physically. It has been rough, but with every breath we are thankful and have our hope in Christ for healing and restoration and provision! God can do whatever he wants, when he wants! So, if transplant is the path for him…..we are all aboard that train! =)

With Love,

The Mackey Family
