After birth, Maci developed a muscle issue on the left side of her neck and back. This caused her to favor laying on that side because it was uncomfortable for her to lay on her other side. Over time and with different exercises, we were able to help with her muscle issue and discomfort but, because she favored that side when laying down, she developed plagiocephaly and brachycephaly. Basically, the back and side of her head is very flat. This has caused some assymetry in her facial features as well as her ears. We have been told by her doctor and specialists that this is not just a cosmetic fix and that the assymetry could cause health issues as she grows throughout her childhood. Plagiocephaly and Brachycephaly can be corrected with the help of a helmet but the optimal time frame for correction is NOW. Maci is 5 months old and they see the best results when therapy begins between 4 and 6 months.
There are 3 levels of severity in these cases and they include Mild, Moderate, and Severe. When Maci was measured for this helmet, she fell on the low end of the Severe category. Unfortunately, our insurance has denied coverage for a helmet. The specialist team was very surprised by this, based on the severity of her case. They tried to appeal the decision but insurance still refused to cover the cost.
Out of pocket, the helmet alone will cost $1500. Based on the time frame of when Maci will need to start this therapy, meaning as soon as possible, there is just no way that we can come up with this amount in time.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. We greatly appreciate any donation you may be able to provide at this time.
