In 2015, when Maci had already been dancing for a couple of years at the ripe old age of four. She was adorable and instantly fell in love with all things dance. That same year, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after battling mental health issues for several years. Myself, Kevin and Maci did our best to keep our lives as “normal” as possible through the numerous treatments, hospital stays, therapy, medication adjustments and subsequent side effects.
Over the last ten years we’ve had a lot of ups and downs as a result of my mental health challenges. Finding stability within my own mind hasn’t been easy but I wake up every day and do what I can. In the last two years it’s become increasingly difficult for me to be a productive member of the workforce. I get a job, I’m stable and then inevitably a bipolar episode knocks my feet out from under me. It’s humiliating and frustrating to be honest.
This year I stopped working entirely because my brain can’t stay focused on the task at hand. It is constantly fighting intrusive thoughts. However, I’m constantly chasing new treatments and trying to stay present for my family.
My inability to work has made it difficult to pay bills as you can imagine. Kevin has been working his tail off but the one thing we’ve struggled with is paying for Maci’s dance competitions and lessons from earlier this year. (My exit from the workforce wasn’t planned.) Her studio owner has been amazing and as flexible as she can but we need help getting her final balance taken care of. It is difficult for me on some levels to discuss this publicly although some of you are aware. I like to spread awareness of what bipolar can sometimes look like for me and help others gain understanding.
Maci’s balance is $3505. If you would like a further break down please reach out. We can go over it. Checks can be sent to Get Up N’ Dance in Bristol with Maci Smith in the memo as well.
Thank you for considering helping Maci and ultimately our family during this time.
