Trek to #MachuPicchu2023 in Memory of Chris Haydon
Donation protected
Who was Chris Haydon?
Christopher Haydon was born 9th June 1949. At the age of 5 he was diagnosed with severe heart problems and had his first operation in 1963 when he was just 13 years old. Chris met the love of his life in London and proposed to Jean before Christmas 1970, they were married a year later in June 1971 and they were together for 49 happy years.
In 1989 Chris's condition became so severe that he needed heart transplant surgery (30 Years ago!) at Papworth Hospital. Soon after he had recovered from his surgery he became the first heat transplant to run and finish the London Marathon, but he didn't settle with just the 1, oh no, he went on to run 4! in 1992, 1996, 1997 and 1999. He also competed in the transplant games where he won Gold medals as well as many other sporting activities (that he was told not to do!) such as London to brighten. Chris had done all of these things to give back to those that helped him, he raised as much money as he could for the British Heart Foundation as a way of thanking them for everything that they did.
(Had to crop this image, his time was 6:17:47)
Although Chris has a wonderful life, having 2 children and 4 grandchildren who loved him very much, the last few years were not good to him, although he never showed it and kept his head up. Chris had a number of hard blows throughout the years, kidney problems, diabetes, pancreatitis, hiatus hernia and finally cancer all whilst living with somebody else's heart.
Chris was all about helping other people no matter what. So we want to continue this in memory of what a great man he was and help those who helped him in his final days. The Ellenor Hospice.
(30th Birthday - 30 years since his Heart Transplant - July 24th 2019)
Why are we trekking!
Chris spent his final days at the Ellenor Hospice in Gravesend where they looked after him and did the best that they could to make sure that he was comfortable. His wife Jean was with him every step of the way and is beyond grateful for everything they the Ellenor did for Chris.
The Ellenor Hospice rely heavily on donations and sponsorships from the friends and family of the people that they help and look after. So we wanted to do our bit to help them in return and raise as much money as we can for this amazing institution that help and support so many others.

Straight from the brochure:
'Voted one of the top 25 treks in the world, this challenging expedition will take us beneath spectacular Andean peaks, through epic Peruvian landscapes and misty cloud forest. We begin our adventure in the colonial town of Cusco then spend two days at a community project nearby, helping with a range of activities to directly assist the community while acclimatising to the high altitude. After returning to Cusco and preparing our kit, we will begin our hike along the Salkantay trail. The route follows an ancient and remote Inca footpath, where snow-capped mountains collide with lush tropical rain forests. The paths are filled with wild strawberries, colourful butterflies and other exotic flora and fauna. Off the beaten path, this trek is one of the most interesting and challenging ways to experience the land of the ancient Incas.'

We will be funding the trek entirely ourselves so all donations from you guys as well as £1,170 each from our trek fees will all go directly to the Ellenor.
"ellenor needs £7 million each year to enable us to provide our care free of charge, when families most need it. Your donation however big or small makes a real difference and enables families to make the most of every second they have together."
Thank you for reading and I hope that you can help us to help the Ellenor to continue to support their patients and family during extremely difficult times.
