MacDella Cooper - our Candidate for the Liberia 2017 National Election

Resilience, hope, and inspiration. These words resonate around the world and they resonate with MacDella Cooper. They are emblematic of her story, and indeed, her life. MacDella is a native of Liberia. During the early 1990's, Liberia was engulfed in a brutal civil war. According to BBC News, this war killed more than 250,000 people, including many of MacDella's close relatives. To save her life, at age 16, she migrated to the United States (US).

MacDella's journey to the US began after the mysterious disappearance of her father. In search of their father, MacDella and two older siblings walked into rebel territory. Surrounded by danger and uncertainty, but resilient, the three teenagers took their only photo of their father and set about tracking his path. The search led them to a refugee camp in neighboring Ivory Coast. After two and a half years of exile in the Ivory Coast, MacDella received clearance from US Government to join her mother and younger siblings in Newark, New Jersey.

Although much better off, and within the arms length of family, Newark presented its own set of challenges for the young refugee. The entire family shared a two bedroom apartment in a Newark housing project and subsisted on food stamps and government aid. Hopeful and undeterred, MacDella set her sights on obtaining higher education. Early on, she had been taught that education is the best way to conquer poverty. And, through hard work and perseverance, MacDella graduated 3rd in her class of 1200 students from Barring High School. She was awarded a full academic scholarship to the College of New Jersey and earned a degree in Electronic Communications. After graduation, Ralph Lauren recruited MacDella to join its corporate team.

MacDella is warm, personable and has a common touch. She makes friends easily. Amongst other things, her personality led to moving with the internationally jet-setting community of New York City and frequenting Paris, London and Milan. However, MacDella never forgot her home. Liberia and her peoples suffering were always on her mind. So, in 2003, she started the MacDella Cooper Foundation (MCF). MCF is a 501c3 international charitable organization to provide resources and relief to her native Liberia. With international connections, MacDella has integrated and employed business, diplomatic, fashion and political worlds in support of her efforts in Liberia.

MCF improves the lives of hundreds of Liberian women and children. But, MacDella wants to do more in Liberia. MCF's success convinced her she could, and anyone can see the need for effective change in leadership and government in Liberia. MacDella's commitment to Liberia is founded on the moral imperative to improve the quality of life for all Liberians. At best, basic social services remain well below pre-civil war levels. At worst, they don't exist. Most Liberian children survive on less than $1 per day.

On October 17, 2016, MacDella Cooper publicly announced her candidacy for President of Liberia in the 2017 elections. Her announcement has been met with excitement and support from political leaders, civil society groups, universities and student activists. Women and tribal groups in Liberia and the diaspora have pledged support for her candidacy. The outpouring of support has been confirmation of MacDell's decision to serve her country in this capacity. But...

THE CHALLENGE

To achieve victory, we need to mobilize and raise meaningful funds by March 2017. If we do, we will help MacDella rise to this great challenge and win.

She will become Liberia's next President with your support.

MacDella has outlined a focused plan to address the most pressing needs of the people of Liberia. But, there are 16 other candidates in this presidential race. Several of those candidates are previous government servants, including the current Vice President. Of the 16, only 6 are viable, according to local Liberian press, and MacDella is among the top 3. Moreover, the people of Liberia want and need change from the status quo. Ms. Cooper offers a fresh perspective, world view and people centric plan to appropriately husband Liberia's resources that begins restore humanity to its people.
