Maastricht stands with Sri Lanka

Hi Maasi community, and people beyond! I am a Sri Lankan-French student at UM and lately I have been closely following the events happening in Sri Lanka that you may have heard of already.

Basically, due to years of catastrophic economic mismanagement, Sri Lanka has sunk into a deep economic crisis, the worst once since the country’s independence in 1948. Sri Lanka’s crippling debt means that the government has failed to provide basic necessities to the people. Lankans have been queuing for items such as flour, dahl, gas and fuel, there is a shortage of medicine, the Sri Lankan Rupee is sinking, and there have been daily power cuts lasting between 1 and 13 hours per day. The pandemic cutting off the country’s income from tourism and the war in Ukraine also had an impact. People cannot make ends meet anymore, some have died while waiting in line or because of exploding gas cylinders. 

Lankans are resilient. Our country has been through a civil war, a guerilla, a devastating tsunami and terror attacks. 

The Euro being a strong and stable currency, your donations make an impact as they can help buy so much more in Sri Lanka. Even a single euro counts.

I am organising this crowdfunding campaign in conjunction with a friend in Sri Lanka who has opened bank accounts specifically for donations. They will go into grassroots initiatives, buying food and supplies to people. We will try to be as transparent as possible.
