"Maastricht goes to Calais" has been a project conducted by four students from Maastricht in 2016 which successfully raised money and different materials for refugees in the Calais refugee camp.
Although the camp has been destroyed last spring, many refugees are still in Calais, now living on the streets desperately in need of all kinds of help. With recent estimates suggesting that over 800 people are sleeping rough outside, and the weather getting colder every day, the need for help in Calais and Dunkirk has never been more overwhelming. We think it is time to act.
Daily reports from the last remaining local charities state that police brutality is constantly increasing - with a normal night for many being spent outside with only a limited amount of sleep due to having to hide from the police. The people there are not just limited to adults - many children and teenagers are also suffering.
We can all feel how cold it is by now. But we can all only imagine how difficult it must be to have to live, homeless, on the streets, in a country that rejects you, with no hope or signs of improvement.
All of this is just happening two and a half hours away from Maastricht. We want to do more to help alleviate at least a little of the suffering there.
The money we raise will go straight to buying bulk food for Refugee Community Kitchen, a charity that provides over 2550 hot meals every day.
Our goal is to organise a sustainable contact with local charity organisations and send a group of people every month from Maastricht to Calais. The first trip will be end of January 2018.
People are people - politics shouldn't change that.
