Help Me Study Jazz in New York — The Next Step in My Journey

My name is Jan Istenič, and I am a 23-year-old jazz drummer from Slovenia.

Music has been a part of my life since I was seven years old, when I first sat behind a drum set. Since then, I have dedicated my life to studying, performing, teaching, and growing as a musician.

After completing my Bachelor's degree in Jazz Drums in Austria, I was accepted into the Master's Program in Jazz Performance at Queens College in New York — an opportunity I have dreamed of and worked toward for many years.

A dream that has been postponed

My plan was to move to New York and begin my Master's studies this September.

Unfortunately, I was not able to obtain my U.S. student visa in time.

One of the main requirements for the visa was demonstrating sufficient financial resources to cover my tuition and living expenses. Despite applying for scholarships, reaching out to sponsors, and doing everything I could to secure the necessary funding, I was unable to raise the required amount in time.

Because of this, I had to postpone the start of this important chapter of my education.

But I don't want to give up on this dream.

Why New York?

New York is one of the world's most important centers of jazz.

Studying at Queens College would give me the opportunity to learn from outstanding musicians and educators, meet musicians from all over the world, perform in one of the most important jazz scenes on the planet, and develop both artistically and professionally.

For me, this is about much more than obtaining another degree.

It is about taking the next step in the life I have chosen as a musician.

Where your support will go

The money raised through this campaign will help me prepare financially for my Master's studies and meet the requirements necessary to obtain my student visa.
