We need your help
My close friend's mother is currently in intensive care at a Private Hospital in Melbourne. This is her situation worded by her daughter Sevda: My mother underwent a biopsy on a mass in her nasopharyngeal region at a public hospital in Melbourne in August. Ever since the surgery she has been in debilitating pain. She begged me to stop her heart. She just wanted to end the misery. She begged god to take her life. We made 3 visits to the emergency department and was sent home with a suggestion that she might have trigeminal neuralgia. In other words suicide disease. Which is nerve pain in the face and back of her head. We struggled for her to be seen by a neurologist. It was time we didn’t have. She was deteriorating fast. On Friday she woke up with a slur. I couldn’t understand what she was saying. I checked for stroke signs and there weren’t any. For months she has been in agony and constantly fed painkillers and nerve tablets. This took another toll on her situation. We were done watching her in pain and feeling helpless. We took her to a private because the public hospital system failed us. She was admitted straight away and had thorough tests and an mri. What they found was that her brain and head was an inflammation mess and it was hard to tell what was going on. Because she doesn’t have private health cover they advocated for mum to be internally transferred to the Royal Melbourne hospital. They failed us again as there were no beds. Day 5 we got a call from the head of ICU. Apparently mum had a code blue. Her oxygen levels had dropped to critical condition. She was now part of the ICU unit. They told us that if she continues the way she is she will die in a few hours. Something in her head was obstructing her breathing. They said they needed to do emergency surgery. Within half an hour she was off to surgery. They performed a scope and did a biopsy and put a tube into her lungs so she can get oxygen. Lots of medical surgeons were involved. They did a scope to figure out what is the actual cause of her breathing problems and found that there are multiple reasons. Nerve damage has caused her tongue to relax and be floppy causing her tongue to fall back into her throat. Her mass is growing into her pharynx. Her brain did not give much detail because of the inflammation. She is currently in ICU stable condition on a ventilator and until they get results from the biopsy they’re going to keep her sedated. Her road to recovery is going to be a long haul. The hospital staff advised transferring to public hospital is not possible. And also have no beds available in ICU. My friends offered to start the go fundme page as my mother's stay in private hospital is and going to be very costly. My family can only cover so much. Bed fees, Surgery fee/s, operating room fee/s, tests will be tens of thousands of dollars.
