On Sunday December 15, 2019 while traveling to support a friend, Tonnette was the second car in a tragic accident on I-40 W in Chapel Hill NC. A driver traveling eastbound after coming across multiple lanes of traffic collided into the car in front of her causing a multi-car accident. During the collision Tonnette’s car flipped and landed in the median ultimately saving her life. She suffered damage to her liver causing internal bleeding, her colon, small intestines, both of her ankles are crushed, along with damage to her hip, and femur bone. She has had 4 surgeries to repair her organs and reconstruct her ankles with more surgeries anticipated. She will require extensive physical therapy to learn to walk again and an extensive inpatients stay. As strong and independent as she is, she will need financial support to survive this very difficult time in her life.
Tonnette recently relocated to the Raleigh NC area and started a new job; because of this she has learned benefits available through here employer are limited to her or are not available at this time. She has already been denied short term disability. The physical and mental scars of this accident are already taken effect as she recently learned she is the only survivor of this tragedy. The burden of worrying about her household expenses and responsibilities coupled with knowing she will be in the hospital for sometime has already begun impacting her ability to focus on her recovery.
