Here is Elgar's story:
Elgar crossed the border into Laredo, TX, on April 19, 2014. He came from Honduras alone, and he was only 17 years old. Once in custody in Texas, he was transferred to four different facilities before finally arriving at Hudson Country Correctional Facility, since he turned 18 and aged out of the children’s facilities.
Elgar has already been through a lot here in America, but he was escaping much worse. In Honduras, he lived with his father and grandmother after his mother left him when he was 2 months old. He calls his grandmother “mama”, because she raised him. At age 7, he left school to work in farming to earn some money. In his neighborhood, there is a constant presence of gangs. A few years ago, a drug lord killed his aunt's boyfriend because he wanted Elgar's aunt to be his wife. After killing his aunt's boyfriend she still declined to be with him and he sent some men to kill her and her family. During this attack, a stray bullet hit Elgar’s 4 ½ year old brother who had to undergo many complicated surgeries.
Elgar fled Honduras due to the violence in his area, and the threats to his family. He knows that if he returns he will likely be killed, or forced to join a gang. Elgar has a chance to start a new life in America, and the judge has offered a $1,500 bail. Please help Elgar start fresh by donating to his bail.
