Reconciliation Swim 2 Rottnest(Wadjemup)
Donation protected
Kaya Wandjoo,
We are a group of young Aboriginal marmuns (men) who have set ourselves the goal to become the first ALL Indigenous Youth team to participate in (and hopefully complete) the Rottnest Channel Swim!
As we are all basically non-swimmers this has been a momentous challenge for us young fullas which has truly tested our courage and resilience.
Besides the hard physical aspects of training, and overcoming fears of sharks and stingers, the other difficult aspect for us as Aboriginal people is the mental and spiritual barriers we face.
Wadjemup (Rottnest) holds a dark history for our ancestors, many of whom were taken from their land (from all over WA) and placed in Aboriginal prisons on Rottnest Island. Most never returned and still lie buried in unmarked graves.
This swim is a way that we as young Aborginal men can turn the pages of history and work towards healing the spirits in Wadjemup.
We want to raise money as part of a youth-led movement to help Reconciliation of Rottnest for our people and at the same time encourage other young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to face their fears and challenge themselves to make good choices, take opportunities and be strong leaders.
