Samantha's Leukemia Fundraising

Dear Family and Friends -

Beloved cousin, niece, and daughter Samantha, who is only 14 years old, was admitted to SOLCA (Sociedad de Lucha Contra el Cáncer, or the Society to Fight Against Cancer) of Ecuador in September 2014, and shortly after was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia called Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Samantha still remains in the hospital, going through chemotherapy arsenic treatments and ATRA (Vitamin A) treatments. She will remain in the hospital until her white blood count reaches a level where she can safely go home. She will then need to come back to the hospital every two weeks for chemotherapy treatments, lasting 5 days at a time, until she is done with the remission induction therapy phase of her treatment. After this, she will need to undergo testing and screenings weekly, and eventually with less frequency, for years to come.

Samantha has been living and studying in Ecuador. She and her family were planning to come to the United States in the Fall of 2014 in search of a better life and more opportunities, like the ones many of us have. One week before they were set to depart, as a result of the medical exams required by the American Embassy, she was diagnosed with this terrible illness.

We are reaching out to our friends and family and asking for your financial support for Samantha. This is a difficult time for the family, and it is very hard for Samantha to ask for any financial assistance, but she really needs help. She needs to stay in Ecuador for her treatment because once she is released from the hospital she will not be allowed to leave her home, use public transportation, go to any public places or most importantly, study as a normal child.

All funds raised here will be used for her treatment, arrangements for her transportation to and from the hospital, and will take care of any of her special needs, including specialized food. They will also cover any unforeseen medical complications, including the recent appendectomy she went through. Funds will also support Samantha's family, including her mother who has recently undergone medical difficulties herself and has devoted herself completely to Samantha's care, and Samantha's 9 year old brother, Jose Ignacio.

With this help, Samantha and her family may one day be able to fulfill their dream of starting a new life in the United States, free of worry from medical or other debt.

Samantha has been bravely fighting cancer for months-- now it is our turn to fight for her future!

Thank you so much for your continued prayers and your support. It makes it so much easier for our family to go through this challenge with all of the support of our family and friends.
