What started as an emergency has turned into an overwhelming medical journey, and as Sydney continues to fight, we are now asking for help to cover the life saving surgery, ICU care, and the ongoing medications she’ll need once she comes home.
Before moving in together, I had a dog named Sookie, the mother of both Summer and Sydney. While we kept Summer, Sydney was rehomed and spent seven years with another owner. After seeing signs of mistreatment, abuse, and neglect, we rescued her and brought her to our home in March 2025.
The months that followed were challenging but expected. Sydney required multiple vet visits for infections, skin conditions caused by severe matting, and emotional healing from past trauma. She was initially fearful and aggressive, but with patience and care, she slowly began to trust us and accept the love she deserved.
Fast forward to last Thursday, while I was away on a work trip, Sam was woken at 3 a.m. to Sydney crying in pain and rushed her to the emergency hospital, a decision that saved her life. She was diagnosed with Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), a rare and life-threatening condition in small dogs.
She required emergency surgery, initially estimated at $7,000. During the procedure, surgeons discovered her stomach had ruptured, requiring additional repairs and extensive abdominal cleaning. Thanks to the incredible surgical team and Sydney’s strength she survived.
Unfortunately, that was only the beginning. Sydney needed intensive post-operative care, including a plasma transfusion and five days in the ICU. The veterinary staff have called her a miracle dog, as the odds were heavily stacked against her. At this point, her medical bills have reached nearly $20,000, with additional costs expected for the medications and care she’ll need at home as she continues to recover.
We are endlessly grateful she is still with us and appreciate any support during her recovery.
