Help Our School Keep it Cool

Father Yermo high school was established more than a half a century ago to provide young women from both Cd. Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas a safe, affordable, and nurturing environment for learning. Today, girls, boys and their parents spend hours each day walking or driving to and from Mexico in search of this value centered education. American and Mexican families are still willing to make considerable sacrifices to improve their children’s lives.

El Paso has long been known for its hot and exceptionally dry summers which required only simple evaporative units known as “swamp coolers,” an inexpensive alternate to refrigerated units to reduce indoor temperatures to a comfortable level. In recent years, El Paso’s climate has grown more humid rendering evaporative units utterly ineffective and detrimental to indoor air quality.

The conditions in the school building are becoming unbearably hot and the inflow of very moist warm air from the evaporative coolers further compounds the problem by elevating the risk of respiratory exposure to mold and mildew growth. Needless to say, the students are suffering both physically and educationally and may even become ill due to the school’s antiquated cooling system.

Our Alma Mater, through Sister Maria our former principal, has reached for our help, and the Alumni has decided to launch its own initiatives to secure funding for this project. We simply cannot allow this obstacle to learning to continue.

The costs of replacing the system are substantial. Each of the sixteen refrigeration units cost $2,500.00 plus the labor for installation. The high school needs 16 units.

Your contribution will be greatly appreciated by the new generations of Father Yermo high school students and faculty, as the new system will provide a much more conducive environment to learning. Please, remember your years as student and provide the new constellation of youngsters with your support, and send them the powerful message of a community of alumni who learned the lesson of service and care.
