The Story So Far:
On Tuesday, November 24th, my daughter Megan was walking to her home just a few blocks from downtown Cedar Falls. The area had received its first winter weather of the year a few days ealier, leaving behind snow and ice. As Megan crossed the train tracks that intersect Cedar Falls' downtown, she slipped on one of these icy patches. Unable to remove her hands from her pockets in time to fully break her fall, Megan's face took the brunt of the impact with the steel of the railroad tracks.
What seemed like a simple accident has had serious consequences. Megan fractured her lower jaw in two places, as well as sustaining hairline fractures throughout her upper jaw and orbital bones. She severely damaged ten or more teeth, and deviated her septum. Her lower teeth are wired together, and she has already undergone several dental procedures. She is unable to eat solid food and is in a considerable amount of pain.
Megan will require months of treatment to correct the damage to her mouth and face. Her doctors currently estimate a total bill of around $20,000. Megan has worked for several years as a behavioral aide to a special needs student. While she loves her work, she has minimal health insurance and no dental coverage at all. She was able to return to work after recuperating over the Thanksgiving break, but has had and will continue to miss valuable working hours for appointments in Iowa City.
So this is the hard part. After a lot of discussion, we realize that it's time to turn to our friends and family for help. I chose to set our goal at $10,000. We know that everyone has their own needs to meet, and even a dent in half of Megan's medical bills will be so valuable to us. We would much rather be on the giving end of things, especially this time of year, but unfortunately that's not where we find ourselves. Thank you all.
