Help needed to pay medical bills.

Hello, my name is Maria Nohemi Cabrera and I live in Queensland, Australia with my family and work in the telecommunications industry. I am creating this GoFundMe page because a member of my family desperately needs your help.

My cousin, Kenny Sury Fernandez, a 39-year-old Salvadorean woman, has been forced to flee to Panama with her daughter, Melissa, and mother after receiving death threats from criminal gangs in El Salvador. The local gang leader had taken a fancy to Melissa and my cousin had no option but to leave her home in the middle of the night in order to get away from him. That would have been trouble enough but things were about to turn into a nightmare for all of them.

In August last year, Sury had to be admitted to Santo Tomas Hospital in Panama City after suffering the rupture of an aneurysm and had to undergo lifesaving emergency surgery. Sadly, 10 days later she experienced complications during a second bout of surgery and suffered a devastating stroke. She is now in a permanently vegetative state and is totally bedridden.

After a month in intensive care, she was discharged from hospital to live at home. As a parting present, the hospital presented the family with a medical bill for US$20,000, which has effectively wiped them out financially.

She is now in the care of her 64-year-old mother and Melissa. They cannot return home to El Salvador for fear of retaliation. They are now living in a rural area with no electricity, no public transport, inappropriate bedding for Sury’s condition and subsisting on a low family income.

The family need help to fund her ongoing medical expenses. Sury’s medications consist of an anticonvulsant, blood pressure medication, blood thinners and other analgesics. In addition, the family need to cover sundry expenses such as diapers, gauzes, creams, palliative care, and gastric feeding with Ensure formula, nutritional juices, etc.

Sury was the household breadwinner and sole supporter of her daughter and mother. As a result her daughter and mother now often go without basic necessities.

As we can see, Sury’s life and the lives that depended on her have changed dramatically.

Her mother has become her full-time carer and works tirelessly 24/7 to meet the demands of her daughter’s condition. Her daughter Melissa graduated high school in 2019 and has not been able to further her studies due to lack of money and her need to stay home to help with the care of her mum. Sury’s brother Bladimir, who has relocated to Panama on a working visa, now supports both Sury’s family as well as his own on what little he can earn.

We strongly believe that God is in control of all things, and He will touch the hearts of many to give Sury the help she needs to move forward in this difficult battle. Thank you for whatever contribution you can spare, be it big or small. God will repay you. Thank You.
