New Zealand Cultural Exchange
Donation protected
Aloha mai kaua,
My name is Rebecca Kapolei Kiili and I am currently teaching at King Kekaulike High School for the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program (HLIP). I have been teaching for a total of eleven years in the HLIP with my first six years completed at Pa’ia School in kindergarten. As I approach my fifth year in working with high school students, I am most grateful for the work that I do each day to perpetuate the Hawaiian language and culture through my teaching experiences with my students and families.
This year, the Department of Education (DOE) has partnered with the Pacific Asian Affairs Council (PAAC) to offer teachers a Teacher Study Abroad Cultural Exchange opportunity In New Zealand during Spring Break from March 13 through March 23, 2015. I have been selected to participate in this professional development opportunity in support of Hokule’a’s World Wide Voyage. As representative of Hawai’i’s DOE, our mission will be to support Hokule’a’s mission of Malama Honua, taking care of island earth. We will be visiting schools and traditional Maori marae to spread this message of hope for our future generations by teaching, learning, and sharing about Hawaiian culture and values.
Along with sharing more about Hawai’i’s people, culture, and traditions, I hope to establish relationships with other teachers, students, and schools so that I may be able to eventually plan for international travel and cultural exchange for my students. I wholeheartedly believe that travel opportunities are priceless because as one learns about other cultures, and peoples, the experience helps one to define and refine his or her own cultural identity, perspectives and worldviews along with developing mutual respect for others.
I am writing to humbly ask for your consideration of supporting my cultural exchange experiences with a donation. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and support.
