Campaign reopened:
I would like to invite anyone willing to help Mark maintain some financial security following being street homeless for countless years.
Please see the original campaign story for further insight.
I befriended a homeless man called Mark McKay a couple of years ago. I would see him on my way to work. He had a very, kind and calming aura about him and wished me a great day every day.
I chip in with his money and food where I can, but every time I walk away, my heart breaks a little bit more.
He came to Birmingham from Portsmouth, as the council there told him they will no longer help him with accommodation. Previously, he worked as a Counsellor, helping people for 5 years via the very council that turned their backs on him. He was struggling with not being able to have help from the local authority, so he made his way to Birmingham.
Ever since, he has been on the streets, unable to get any help. He has had appointments with outreach workers to try and find some support, but they didn't show. This is the fourth time, that I know of, that the homeless outreach team have stood him up.
But today, I realised that I had to do something for this lovely, intelligent and kind man. He was sat outside Morrisons, watching the world pass him by. He never asks for change, but if people want to give him some change, obviously he is very, very appreciative.
This morning, he was given a £100 fine from the Police for "begging". He slipped his hand underneath the thin sheet he was wrapped in and pulled out the document. How in the world is he going to pay for that, if people don't give him they change they aren't really going to miss? Soon after, a man walking passed him offered him a cigarette. He accepted it with gratitude, but the Police RAN back out of the store and ranted at him, “we’ve just given you one fine. Do you want another one”?
This is one reason I am setting this up and the other reason is that he needs a birth certificate, as he didn't realise he could apply for benefits, by using the Job Centre c/o address. He can't apply unless he gets a birth certificate, so this is why I need help to make this happen.
I would really appreciate the help in supporting Mark in such a very bleak situation. If he donesn't pay the £100 fine, he will go to prison and this is going to go against him if he is in the position to find work in the future, which is another thing I am aiming to support him with.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help me to save this soul! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
