On October 20th our dear friend Lynx’s vehicle was broken into in East Vancouver right outside of Vancouver Burlesque Company, where over $15,000 of their costumes were stolen. Lynx is a gifted showgirl and pole dancer, and this loss represents over 10 years worth of financial and creative investment into their craft. Almost every single one of their costumes was designed by them, made to be paired with unique acts and shows that centre a theme around each of them. As performance and dancing is Lynx’s primary source of income, this is a massive setback in their career.
Lynx has been open with their struggles with mental health, and has written in their words the following statement:
“Performing and being on stage is my biggest passion in life and one of the few things that brings me a true sense of peace and has the ability to calm my inner turmoil. It is hard to put a price tag on this because it’s so much more than just the money spent having the garments made, not to mention that each costume can take many weeks to months to be completed…
I have literally poured my heart and soul into my art, and the idea of having to start from scratch is so unbelievably overwhelming, I have no idea what to do with myself right now.
People may not understand how big of a deal this is to lose all at once, and how important all of these pieces are to me. Some may even think that it is shallow because they are material possessions. But the reality is that these costumes are an extension of who I am as a performer and human, and a huge part of my identity. I have nothing left to work with and I feel so empty and heartbroken.”
Lynx is a pillar in the Vancouver performing arts scene. They are a tireless advocate and trailblazer for sex positivity and education and a fierce advocate for both local and international human rights causes. They have spearheaded several mutual aid calls and organized events to raise funds to support grass roots movements as well as utilized their platform to crowdsource thousands of dollars in mutual aid for asylum seekers, Queer + Trans Black, Indigenous and people of colour.
Lynx understands that many people are going through tough times right now and that there are likely more pressing matters to tend to. They do not want anyone to put themselves out by trying to help, so please only donate if you have the means. Even sharing this go fund me with people is immensely appreciated.”
All donations made will help Lynx regain a sense of footing in their career and to source seamstresses out to remake their costumes, which they will need to be able to work again. They have given so much of themselves to our community, and we are so grateful to have the opportunity to show them our support and give back.
In the meantime Lynx has been scouring the streets of the Downtown Eastside and online resellers to see if they can find any of their missing pieces, so if by some crazy chance they end up finding all of their belongings, all the money raised through this go fund me will be re-distributed to mutual aid with receipts provided to show proof.
