As many of those who have met me know, I have struggled lymphedema for most of my life. This is a condition where your lymph system can not drain the lymph fluid that your body creates every day, so it pools and causes swelling. Lymphedema makes your skin hold toxins and can cause infections that can be life-threatening.
My therapists have told me that this condition is something I have had since birth. The complications of lymphedema started as more of an inconvenience by making some things difficult, but I was still able to function and have a life. As it has gotten worse, my legs have become so heavy and out of control that I could not walk enough to leave my house, and it became impossible to do simple things like eat out with friends and family or attend church. In addition to these daily troubles, I have also been hospitalized multiple times for serious infections caused by my lymphedema.
Through a series of trial and error, I was able to find a wonderful team of doctors and therapists that have been able to treat me. Through their efforts, I have lost nearly 100 pounds and 16 inches of lymph fluid off my lower legs. I have been able to become more active and resume doing activities with friends and family. This has given me back my future. However, to stay on this path of keeping my lymphedema under control, I need special custom-made garments that will keep this from returning.
These garments will cost about $6100.00 to be made and work how I need. My insurance has refused to help pay for these for me, for unknown reasons. These are an item I desperately need for my overall health to be able to continue working towards my goals and my future. I am asking for any and all help to pay for these garments so I can keep walking, and keep moving forward. I would be forever thankful and grateful for any help I can receive.
