"Many Lyme Disease patients are forced to seek out true Lyme-Literate doctors and often must pay for medical expenses out of pocket"
Do you remember being a teenager? A time we spent enjoying the simple joys of our youth. staying out late watching the stars, going to concerts, and long chats on the phone, land line, of course! We were studying hard in school, and most of the time, working really hard after. Friends and the mall consuming a lot of our free time? Well my sister did all of that just like the rest of us, but there was something that nobody, not even her, knew was happening inside her. A single tick bite, location unknown, A bacteria growing in her body, invading every system causing heart problems, stomach issues, neurological damage and the list goes on. A type of pain we don't see, and on her "better than awful" days, she'll try not to show. Not being able to truly enjoy the joys of her youth, Sarah spent a lot of time in doctors offices, recieving the run around. Traveled out of state to see specialists, and even as far as exploratory surgery! She's been through it all.
Three years ago this month, after a tremendous loss of hope she may ever feel well, she found a doctor who thought maybe it could be MS, so he sent Sarah for an MRI. Three MRI's were performed on different parts of Sarah's body. The results convinced her neurologist to do a different test, a test so controversial, so hard to read, so vague that there were three different ones performed. But that last one, sent to a lab in California came back to what Dr. W has thought. Lyme Disease and coinfections. The relief of finally having a diagnosis overwhelmed her for she now knew where her focus needed to go. Finding a Lyme-Literate doctor is very tough, but she found one in Denver and started her journey. Over the course of 2 1/2 years, Sarah traveled over the mountain, through sunshine and rainbows, to blizzards and closed roads. Hotel stays, and same day travel. Unfortunately, we are now at another fork in this long road, a road that travels out of state to seek treatment.
Most of Sarah's treatment has been paid for out of pocket, adding up to THOUSANDS of dollars! She saves every dime, and pays all of her bills on time. Not to mention the cost of travel. Going to Denver and staying a night was one thing, but now her next option takes her farther away, for longer stays. My best friend and sister has suffered for a very long time, and many of us may have ever seen it. She loves her job and goes above and beyond for everyone in her life! She loves to travel, and her photos take me back to my early childhood. I hope we can help her out on her journey, take a little burden off her chest. Rally for Sarah!
