Lauderdale Yacht Club (LYC) has two High School race teams, St. Thomas Aquinas and Pine Crest School, as well as an Open High School Sailing Program (OHSS), an outreach program to Fort Lauderdale area high schools where students who want to learn to sail and race have the opportunity to learn on LYC 420 sailboats. LYC also has summer sailing which teaches high school, middle school and elementary sailors on 420s, with over 180 students taking part in summer camp every year.
LYC High School Race Teams have qualified for multiple national championships and have been a perennial top-five powerhouse nationally for years. Moreover, college sailing is dominated by LYC Sailing Program graduates with multiple team race, fleet race and girls national championships. The OHSS sailing program has taught countless students how to sail, many of whom have went on to be on the race team and sail in college.
A main goal of the LYC sailing program is to help high schoolers get into the college of their dreams. Although there are not college scholarships for sailing, the sport of sailing absolutely helps sailors get into colleges, as sailing is a college sport and many of the top colleges in the country pride themselves on their sailing team.
The sailing program's goal to provide the best coaching and sailing is based primarily on the condition of the boats for sailors. Currently, half of the LYC 420 fleet is aged beyond their useful life with bows splitting, fiberglass weakening and it is becoming very difficult to keep them all sailing, not to mention they are not competitive on the racecourse.
We need your help! We are raising funds to purchase new 420s so LYC sailors have the opportunity to be competitive sailors and show their results to the college of their dreams.
Our goal is to purchase six new 420s to replace the current 420s that are over ten years old and aged beyond their useful life.
Timeline from purchase to delivery is at least three to four months. The sailors need these race boats as soon as possible, hopefully by January 2020, which means the order needs to be placed before Labor Day (September 2, 2019).
