Hi! My name is Lauren Kennedy Tucker and I have cerebral palsy. Yes, I know that sounds serious-and it is; but I can do many things already and I'm learning more every day. My Storyis not meant to be sad, but hopeful! You see, on March 31, 2013, I made my grand entrance into the world seven weeks early. My mommy and daddy were surprised, but my older brother Logan had come six weeks early, so they were knid of prepared for another preemie! After somewhat of a rough start, and about 3 weeks at the Janeway NICU, my mommy and daddy brought me home to begin my new life with my family.
I'm sure my big brother thought I was a dolly for him to play with-until I started to cry! And...I cried A LOT for about 3 months! I know my mommy was so tired, but I couldn't tell her what was wrong but she did her best to make me feel better. When I turned 8 months old, my mommy started to get a little concerned because I couldn't sit yet; in fact I couldn't roll over! She knew that I needed to be seen by special doctors and took me to the Janeway where they knew at a glance that I had Cerebral Palsy! My mommy and daddy cried a lot about this, but they could not change the damage that was done to my brain when I was a tiny, tiny baby. I didn't want them to be sad, so I learned to roll over and I'm working really hard at learning to sit. One day, I'm going to do it!
My doctors are starting me on a medicine called baclofen to help manage the tone in my muscles and hopefully help me move easier. Right now, because I have spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, my muscles get very tight and my brain don't know how to stop this from happening. The medicine is suppose to tell my brain how tight my muscles should be; helping me to sit, stand and hopefully walk!
That brings me to the purpose of this story. Right now, I live in a beautiful 2 story house with a big back yard. I love it here! But, there is a problem-my bedroom is upstairs. Right now, because I'm still little, my mommy and daddy carry me up the stairs to my room. This is fine for now, but I'm growing and getting heavier and I want to be able to do this on my own. I don't know if I will walk on my own and even if I do, stairs are too hard for me. So, we are looking for a house that has only one story so that I can play wherever my brother plays and go to my bedroom and bathroom on my own.
Mommy and daddy are trying to sell this house first because they need that money to pay bills and put down a down payment on another house. Becasue my daddy has been really sick for almost 3 years and unable to work, I know that they struggle to make this happen. My mommy is working, but there's still no extra money for buying a house or any other special equipment I need; like splints for my legs and a special walker to teach me how to take steps.
I know that there are other boys and girls that need help too; and one day, I will help them! Right now though, my family and I would appreciate any help you can offer. It's hard to ask for help, but sometimes that's the only way to make a wish come true. Please think of my story and even if you can't help financially, please keep us in your thoughts and prayers because we need those so much too!
