My dad, Dr. Ralph Hawkins, is an archaeologist, and he is launching an archaeological field project at Khirbet ‘Ataruz, an ancient site that has one of the most magnificent Iron Age temples in the country of Jordan, just across the river from Israel. In Bible times, it was the country of the Moabites.
The Bible says that some of the Israelites lived in this area, and an ancient artifact called the Moabite Stone says this, too. It says the Israelite tribe of the Gadites had lived there "forever." And it implies that they had built a temple at 'Ataruz, too. You can see some of the remains of the temple in this picture, below.

The questions my dad and the other archaeologists are trying to answer is whether the ancient town and temple at 'Ataruz are really Israelite, like the Bible and the Moabite Stone say.
I want to work on the excavation this year and help find the answers to these questions. Is this ancient site really an Israelite town with an Israelite temple in it? If it is, my dad says we'll have to rewrite the early history of ancient Israel.
On this excavation, we'll be living in the city of Madaba for nearly a month (May 13-June 6). We'll work on the dig each day from about 5:00 in the morning until about noon, and after lunch we'll wash and "read" pottery until about 3:00 in the afternoon. After work, we'll have some free time to explore Madaba, and we'll get to see some famous biblical sites on the weekends like Mt. Nebo and the site where Jesus was baptized.
I'd like to ask if you would sponsor me for this exciting project. I want to help my dad and the rest of the expedition solve these mysteries of the Bible. I want to be a part of rewriting history.
As a way of saying "thanks," after I get back I'll send you a report (with photos) on the 2015 dig at 'Ataruz.
Thanks so much for your consideration and your support!
