Help Send Our Future Leaders to DC!

Donation protected
A Quick Note...

Hello family, friends, and extended super humans,

Greetings from overly decorated and swollen book-shelved 8th grade history classroom in Oakland, California. This summer our 8th garders will embark on  a life-changing trip to Washington DC! Students will experience the history they have learned over the past 3 years and gain once-in-a-lifetime experience that will empower them to start and continue high school along a path of meaningful, purposeful, and social change. Please join us if you believe in the power of this mission and the everlasting effects this trip will have on our future leaders. Any donation will be a huge step closer to DC! This trip will not be possible without the support of those (near and far) who believe in our students and their futures. All donations will go directly towards student travel funds. Your support will change lives in the most meaningful of ways. I can promise you that : )

Thank you so much!!!

The Full Story...

Over the past 5 years, it has been my daily joy to wake-up and teach extraordinary students at Lionel Wilson Preparatory Academy, where 2-years ago I welcomed a group of hot-chetto-loving, pencil-lead-seeking, 6th graders, who all too quickly became my 7th graders, and before I could accept that they were “growing up too fast” they became my 8th grade students. I have watched them grow into determined, compassionate, and inspiring young men and women who, in the blink-of-an-eye, will soon be graduating and off chasing their passions and changing the world! But…before that…WE’RE GOING TO WASHINGTON DC!! Where all we’ve been studying and discovering over 3 years will come to life! # Americanhistory #goals

Let me tell you a little bit about my students and their classroom journey through American History. As 6th graders their eyes were open to the untold history of the United Sates and took on multiple perspectives as Native Americans, colonial settlers, King George III, and the true OG himself George Washington. In the 7th grade they tackled challenging texts like the Bill of Rights and US Constitution and applied their interpretations of these documents to make justified rulings as Supreme Court Justices on real world issues and cases. So far this year, as 8th graders, students have been Election 2016 CRAZY. There is nothing that will stop them from debating presidential policies and making sure they get in the final “mic drop” with facts and evidence to support their positions! They have also taken a step back in History and were “tweeting live” as Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, analyzing how he was able to change public opinion about the Civil War. They have proven over, and over, and over again that they are students who desire more. More learning, more understanding, and with that more change.

Our students and families bring so many assets to school each day – determination, tight family relationships and values, creativity, humor, and unworldly work ethic.  One persistent challenge we face as a community is resources.  Every year the school adds computers, teachers, support staff and extracurricular activities to our programming.  Unfortunately, the resources we have don’t pay for things like this awesome Washington DC trip.  Our school data shows that over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch each year. We don’t have a well-financed booster club or PTA to offer scholarships or sponsorships, and a number of our student have never traveled beyond California, or even the Bay Area. Although our families would give “the world” to give their children the means to travel it, it can be very challenging to financially balance what is needed day-to-day, over what is wholeheartedly desired for their children. This trip will not be possible without the donations of those who believe its power.  If you believe that educational opportunities should not be determined by the neighborhood you live in, the income of your family, or the low state funding of your school, and are inspired by the idea of sending an extraordinary group of 8th graders and future leaders on this life changing trip…

PLEASE (with every emphasis possible and the sound of overly-excited and undoubtedly-grateful 8th graders cheering behind you…) consider a contribution. Your donation will touch so many lives and have everlasting effects. I can promise you that.

All donations will go directly towards student travel funds.

With a heart full of love and gratitude,

Ms. Greer
