I have had a my birthday and it turned out it was not a prime number after all. But luckily I am a historian and not a mathematician. Many thanks for all your donations. 

A historian-friend Maike Lehmann is also an April child and has kindly tagged onto this fundraiser, since she too feels strongly about our colleagues in Lviv. Please, donate generously - possibly again, if you know me and Maike - the money will be well-spent and will have an impact for many years. We will update you regularly. The war has dragged on long enough now that we have gotten used to its horrible presence, but it will follow us as a historical shadow for generations. 

Maike is also the co-editor of the ZoL dossier on Ukraine, which reflects a bit how our 'tribe' - Eastern European historians - have tried to make sense to what is happening.

In a few days I will reach another age with a dreaded prime number. That and given that the world gives little reason to celebrate, I want to direct the birthday energy into something useful. Instead of sending me flowers or the like, please give to the Lviv Center for Urban History.

My colleague and friend Sofia Dyak and her staff are doing brave and important work there under the most difficult conditions. They are using their scholarly training to collect and document evidence of people's experiences of war. They have chosen to stay in Lviv, despite multiple offers to exit, because they believe that their towns and country needs them at their place. Doing, writing and living history.
