Help Me Teach in China

Hello everyone! For those of you who are not as familiar with who I am, my name is Allison. I am a junior persuing an Elementary Education Major with a Litercay Minor at the University of Northern Iowa. I am an academic scholar, involved with the on-campus BASIC group, and I work for the YWCA of Black Hawk Community as a Childcare Assisstant at one of the local school's after school program.
I have always dreamed of traveling abroad, and now I am presented with an amazing opportunity to teach a class of my own in China this summer! This trip consists of much more than the typical college study abroad program. I will depart from the U.S. and arrive in Beijing, China where we will be introduced to the culture and taken on several tours of the major attractions in the area. Yes, this means I will get to see one of the seven wonders of the world: The Great Wall! From Beijing we will travel to Guilin to visit a few more major cultural aspects of China and its historical beauty.
Next, we will transfer to Dongguan where we will be introduced in the opening ceremony of the English Summer Camp. We will meet our students and begin to work with them and teach them all about the American culture over the next three weeks. I will be their sole teacher, with the aid of a translator when necessary. These students are extremely excited to be participating in the English Summer Camp and find the English language and American culture intriguing. This will not only allow the students to greatly improve their English speaking skills, but it will also provide them with more insight as to how Americans view things.
This teaching opportunity will also allow great personal, academic, and professional growth for myself. By the daily interactions of being the teacher for a whole class of Chinese studnets, I will be able to gather insight into how students of varrying cultural backgrounds learn things best. I will be able to learn techniques of teaching that no one would ever be able to teach me in a regular college classroom setting. Being the teacher of these students will also boost my confidence as a future teacher, as well as provide me with the perfect time to critique my classroom management skills. I would not be able to dream up a better teaching experience than this.
We will participate in the closing ceremony, and transfer to Hong Kong for the last couple days of the trip. Here we will reflect as a group on our teaching, as well as visit some final tourist sites. From Hong Kong we will fly back home to U.S.
This trip will transform my personal outlook on cultural learning as well as my future teaching career, not to mention what this will provide for the future of these students.
Sadly, just as any travel experience, this is an expensive experience with not much aid available. This is where I need your help! It will mean the world to me, and my future students!
Thank you so much,
Allison
