Help Luther Run Again: Good Boy Needs TPLO Surgery
Donation protected
Today we're celebrating Luther's 7th birthday by starting a campaign to give him the greatest gift of all - a chance to run again.
If any of you know Luther, or have met a dog like him, he's a rescue pit mix. He's scared of most men and nervous of almost all city sounds because of the unfathomable abuse he endured as a bait dog prior to his rescue. It took us so long to gain his trust and show him not everything in the world treats him with cruelty.

He's scared of most men and nervous of almost all city sounds because of the unfathomable abuse he endured as a bait dog prior to his rescue. It took us so long to gain his trust and show him not everything in the world treats him with cruelty.
But the one thing we found that really lights up his eyes and makes him feel confident is to run. Nothing makes him feel more free than when he has a big open space where he can run without a care. His happiness is absolutely contagious when he gets going.
Play with toys? Overrated. Hang out with other dogs? They're ok. Go swimming? As if. All Luther wants to do is run.
Luther got so fast that once when he chased behind an ATV he clocked in at 30 mph!

He became the BEST backpacking buddy. He could keep up with me on all my 20 mile hikes in the mountains all while carrying his own backpack filled with treats and snacks. (Although, I'm sure his true mileage would often be closer to 25 miles because while I'd be on trail, he'd be looping around to and fro in the trees and wildflowers with the biggest grin on his face.)
He just loves to run. It's his favorite.
On one of his winter outings he got a major case of the zoomies, and while he was doing his crazy energetic circles of excitement he skid out and slipped on the ice, tearing his knee.
Initially our vet thought he could heal without surgery, but one case of the zoomies led to another and his injury worsened. Unfortunately, we no longer can go the non-surgical route and Luther's only chance to run again is through TPLO Surgery.
We've visited multiple vets and based on all of their opinions they are optimistic the surgery would go smoothly because he is otherwise in good health. The one thing holding us back from scheduling this surgery is finances. I struggle as is to make monthly rent, on top of bills and student loans. From comparing quotes we've received from our multiple vet visits, the average cost of surgery (including the post-op costs of rehabilitation, physical therapy, and necessary prescriptions) is $6,000.
Ever since his injury Luther has visibly become depressed. He no longer has his big smile on his face. His sparkle has faded away. The only time his paws get to feel the freedom of running is when they're twitching in his dreams.
Let's give Luther the greatest present of all and the birthday this good boy deserves. Let's give Luther the chance to run again.

Anything helps, and I know Luther will do endless zoomies of gratitude for your generosity and kindness once he is fully healed and recovered.
We just want to be able to see that big smile on his face again. Lu truly is a good boy.
