On Saturday September 12th, my dog Luther was hit by a truck.
That morning around 6am I had let him out to the bathroom. Luther decided to go on a little adventure. Luther was born in Colorado and is an avid explorer and outdoorsman. We live by a bunch of trees so at first I did not think anything of it because he likes to go in there to do his business. This was my first mistake.
Time started passing by and he was gone a longer time than normal so I went to start looking for him. I ended up spotting him at the back of our neighborhood complex and could not get him to come back home with me. So I ran back to the house to get his leash and harness. As I was coming back out the house Luther was walking up the drive way very slowly and limping with his left back leg.
In the short time that I was grabbing his leash, Luther was hit by a large lifted silver pick up truck. At first when I saw his injury I thought he was bitten by an alligator or some animal but the vet let me know it looked like he had been hit by a car because of the road rash on him. I later found out by a witness through our community facebook page that it was this truck.
I rushed him immediately to the Emergency Vet which is a good 30 minutes drive from home. Luther has been staying and receiving care at the Savannah Emergency Vet since.
He luckily did not sustain any major broken bones or internal injuries but he has a major open gash on one of his inner thighs that cannot be easily sewn back up. The worst worst case scenario is that they may have to remove that leg but we are hoping this will not happen. Even though we are aware there are many happy 3 legged doggies out there I would prefer to get him a better option for him and not just take the easiest option.
I am fundraising to help pay for Luther's Vet Bills. Luther deserves the best care and the best treatment plan available to him. He is such a strong beautiful boy who fought for his life. He is a very athletic boy who enjoys running and bouncing around. He definitely carries the crazy boxer genes. After getting hit by a large vehicle he walked himself home to me. This is very uncommon for a dog to get hit in the back like he did and be able to get himself home. He is a beast. Luther did not deserve this and should have never been put in this situation. I understand this is my fault but that is why I will do anything to give him the best care and outcome of this situation no matter the cost.
So far his vet bills have cost me almost $3,000. We meet with a specialist on Monday Sep 14th to receive the rest of his treatment options. I am estimating I will spend up to around $8,000 to $10,000 on surgery as well as other vet recovery treatments, xrays, blood tests and pain medication for Luther.
Anything will help get Luther what he truly deserves!!
