Lupe Howell is an extraordinary human being, mother of two, wife, friend, and legal advocate.
As she was training for the Tobacco Road Half Marathon, Lupe went to the emergency room because she was having back pain; at that point, she was under the impression that this was most likely caused by overtraining.
Time went by and the pain progressed to her side, so her doctors decided to run some tests.
On what should have been one of the happiest days of her life, the last day of law school classes, Lupe received a phone call that forever changed her life. The results from her biopsy were back, and she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer.
Later, an MRI revealed that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, which meant that the cancer was now considered to be Stage 3. Soon thereafter, a CT scan, bone scan, and a PET scan revealed that the cancer had spread to her rib, meaning that she has Stage 4 breast cancer.
Lupe is fierce, and she will fight with everything she has. She will be receiving treatment at the Duke Cancer Center in Raleigh, and will begin chemotherapy.
As it is generally known, cancer treatment is expensive. A person can have the best insurance offered in this country, and still feel the strong financial pressure of out-of-pocket costs. Every day, people in America go into debt trying to pay for life-saving medical treatment.
It is our hope to help Lupe and her family through this fundraiser. Even if you can't make a large donation, please consider making a small one. In these situations every bit helps.
