One of our territory reps, Lupe Cuellar had a fire in her apartment building on Saturday 12/17. She was out to breakfast and when she came home, she had found the unit above her had been completely gutted by a fire and her apartment had smoke and water damage.
As you can imagine, it’s been devastating and she’s left with questions of where she will live, if anything is salvageable and trying to figure out what her rights are.
Earlier today, the owner told her he was invoking the 72 hour option to cancel her lease and return the rent/deposit she had.
She is waiting for clearance to go into her apartment and try to remove personal items. The landlord has offered to pay for the hotel through tomorrow 12/21, however she has asked the owner for an extension through Christmas so she doesn’t have to worry about this right now.
She is unsure what items in her apartment are salvageable, if any. She walked out with just a few items of clothing, 2 pairs of shoes. no toiletries, no food.
Over the next few weeks, she will be looking for a new place and the unfortunate part is that Lupe did not have renters insurance.
There is no obligation, but if you would like to help or forward this to your teams, we would be grateful for any support.
