Lung Transplant for Joyce
Donation protected
Hi my name's Moses and I've set up this fundraiser for my mom, Joyce. My mom has always been the most resilient, most hardworking person I have ever known. Sadly, her tireless dedication has led to the decline of her own health.
Over the past few years, my mom has been out of work and fighting through severe pneumonia which has caused extensive damage to both her lungs. During that time, she underwent treatment after treatment until finally the bacteria in and on her lungs have become resistant to antibiotics and the damage is too great. Imagine buying a new balloon, poking holes in it, and trying to blow it up. Sadly, this is the situation. Her lungs are beyond repair and the only way forward is a double lung transplant.
The lung transplant procedure and aftercare are very costly. My mom will need to move from Ottawa to Toronto 2 months prior to the procedure. After the procedure, she will spend 7 days in ICU and 3 weeks in the hospital. She will then be required to stay in Toronto for 2 months for weekly hospital visits and for doctors to monitor her progress. This is also a period of time for which she’ll be required to have a 24/7 caregiver. After that, she will need to make monthly trips to Toronto for another 6 months. Finally, the most costly part of the process is the medication which she will have to be on long-term and will cost between $4,000 to $6,000 a month, some but not all of which is covered by Trillium.
The major costs for this procedure are for transportation, accommodation in Toronto, medication, and a caregiver. Our family has been trying to put aside money to cover some of these costs, but with every passing day our mom’s condition gets worse. We’re turning now to friends, family, and the greater community to help us. She is in pain with every breath and we want nothing more than to put a stop to it, but we know we can’t do it alone.
Please consider donating. Words of encouragement, support and prayers also go a long way.
Thank you! <3
