Dear friends,

My heart is in deepest pain. My mother, Soila Esperanza Melgar, was recently diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma, Stage IVa. I would like you to thank you in advance for your kind donation. I am so very grateful. Every amount is helping my mom to live.

 

My greatest inspiration

My mother is my greatest inspiration in life. She worked very hard to raise my brother, Kelvin, and I. Because of our situation in Honduras, we lived a life of desperate poverty. She used to work cleaning houses, selling flowers on the street, washing clothes, and taking care of the children of other families to provide for her own children’s needs. Yet, even with all of the hours she worked, we still never had enough. As a result, an international philanthropic organization (Children International) accepted me into its program to help provide for my needs by pairing me with a sponsor who sent a monthly donation to provide support.

 

My mother’s struggles on behalf of my brother and me became my greatest motivation to change our lives. I wanted to create a different reality for her. I wanted to give my mother a different life. I saw education as the path to making that change. And my mother encourage me every step of the way. While other children’s parents in our same situation took them out of school to find work to help support their families, my mother did the opposite. She knew that schooling was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty in which we lived.

 

Our plans

As I have grown and matured in my life, I have continued to persevere in my education. The first step was to graduate from college after obtaining my undergraduate degree. Then, in 2019, I was granted a Fulbright scholarship to continue pursuing my Master’s degree at a university in the United States. I returned to my home country just two months ago with the excitement and hope of starting to build the life that my mother had always wanted for the two of us — and my hopes of giving my mother the new life that she deserved. In my efforts to pursue not only a better future for us but also for others struggling in Honduras, I was granted the opportunity of an internship at the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in Honduras.

 

We had so many plans and hopes for our new future! But things took a different turn a couple of weeks ago when we learned about her cancer diagnosis.

 

Public Health Systems Deficiency

Public hospitals in my country, Honduras, have not been able to provide an adequate treatment response to her rapidly deteriorating condition. This fact has motivated us to look for other alternatives in the country’s private health system. My family has helped us pay for hospitalization, ambulatory medication, as well as for her first cycle of chemotherapy. Yet, we are now facing financial constraints, which has led us to asking kind and generous individuals like you to help my mother in continuing to fight this battle.

 

My mother’s significance

It is difficult for me to find the precise words to express what my mother means to our lives. Sometimes I tend to write poems for her, and that helps me a bit. A couple of months ago, I wrote this one for her:

 

my dreams were woven with my mother`s red thread

with the needle that pierced the spring of her hands

they were woven with crystalline water from her eyes

its water was my source in the dryness of my days

 

my dreams were woven with stitches of deep love

with fabrics that repaired my torn clothes

and even the cracks in my soul

her hands and her eyes and her heart crumbled

as she shaped a fragmented girl

together they built the fabric that wove me whole from inside out.

a so pure red which runs slowly from within her all

from where the undeserved miracle is born

 

my mother wove me with red threads that she tore from herself

with them she gave me life

she gave me dreams

she gave me a future

 

I have the certainty that God is with us and that He is taking care of the things that I and my family cannot. I fully trust that He is working within her too. My confidence is founded on Isaiah 53: 5.

 

FOLLOWING IS SOME ADDITIONAL DETAILS FROM JOHANNY TO INFORM YOUR DECISION TO MAKE A DONATION:

 

Explain what happened

My mother has recently been diagnosed as having lung cancer, Stage IVa. No public hospitals in Honduras can give appropriate medical treatment and support to her rapidly deteriorating condition. Given this, we have decided to reach out to private health institutions for hospitalization and chemotherapy treatment. This step, unfortunately, has resulted in our lack of economic resources to continue to pay for her chemotherapy and hospitalization.

As described above, my mother's condition is rapidly deteriorating. Given this, I would like to have her hospitalized in an appropriate institution as soon as possible.

Your kind donation will significantly help my mother live, giving all those who love her, including me, a tremendous amount of hope.

 

Explain if there are other ways you need help

I am also considering having my mother get treatments abroad. As stated above, I am currently seeking help from a private institution in Honduras. However, I am also looking for further possibilities of treatments outside Honduras in order to make the best decision. I would profoundly appreciate it if anyone is in a condition to help me to get my mom out of my country to receive better treatment.

 

Tell potential donors how urgent your situation is

My mother's doctors say that she has very little opportunity to live for now without appropriate treatments. However, she has no efficient options right now because of the limited funds and resources of the public health system in Honduras. In order to save my mother, I have to figure out the way to have her get appropriate treatments as soon as possible.

 

I am already unbelievably thankful for all the help we’ve received so far from friends and family like you. I’m sending you my deepest, infinite, and most sincere prayers of gratitude to all of you for reading this, for spreading the word, for praying with us.

-Mi mayor inspiración
Mi madre es mi mayor inspiración en la vida. Ella trabajó muy duro para criar a mi hermano Kelvin y a mí. Debido a nuestra situación en Honduras, vivimos una vida de carencias muy aguda. Ella solía trabajar limpiando casas, vendiendo flores en la calle, lavando ropa y cuidando a niños de otras familias para satisfacer las necesidades de sus propios hijos. Sin embargo, incluso con todas las horas que trabajó, nunca tuvimos suficiente. -Nuestros planes
A medida que he crecido y madurado, he seguido perseverando en mi educación. El primer paso fue graduarme de la universidad. Luego, en 2019, me concedieron una beca Fulbright para cursar mi maestría en una universidad de Estados Unidos. Regresé a mi país de origen hace solo dos meses con la emoción y la esperanza de comenzar a construir la vida que mi madre siempre había querido para nosotras dos, y mis esperanzas de darle la nueva vida que se merece. En mis esfuerzos por perseguir no solo un futuro mejor para nosotras sino también para otros que luchan en Honduras, se me concedió la oportunidad de realizar una pasantía en la Oficina del Coordinador Residente de las Naciones Unidas en Honduras.

¡Teníamos tantos planes y esperanzas para nuestro futuro! Pero las cosas tomaron un giro diferente hace un par de semanas cuando nos enteramos de su diagnóstico de cáncer.

-Deficiencia de los sistemas de salud pública
Los hospitales públicos de mi país no han podido brindar una respuesta de tratamiento adecuada a su condición de rápido deterioro. Este hecho nos ha motivado a buscar otras alternativas en el sistema de salud privado del país. Mi familia nos ayudó a pagar la hospitalización, la medicación ambulatoria y su primer ciclo de quimioterapia. Sin embargo, ahora nos enfrentamos a limitaciones financieras, lo que nos ha llevado a pedir a buscar la solidaridad de personas amables y generosas como ustedes que ayuden a mi madre a seguir librando esta batalla.

-El significado de mi madre
Me resulta difícil encontrar las palabras precisas para expresar lo que mi madre significa para nuestras vidas. A veces tiendo a escribirle poemas y eso me ayuda un poco. Hace un par de meses, le escribí este:

mis sueños se tejieron con el hilo rojo de mi madre
con la aguja que traspasó la primavera de sus manos
se tejieron con agua cristalina de sus ojos
su agua fue mi fuente en la sequedad de mis días
 
mis sueños se tejieron con puntadas de amor profundo
con tejidos que reparaban mis ropas rotas y hasta las grietas en mi alma
sus manos y sus ojos y su corazón se desmoronaban
mientras le daba forma a una niña fragmentada
juntos formaban la fibra exacta que me entretejía desde adentro.

de ese rojo puro que corre lentamente desde adentro de su todo
desde donde surge el milagro inmerecido
 
mi madre me tejió con hilos rojos que arrancó de sí misma
con ellos me dió vida

Tengo la certeza de que Dios está con nosotros y que se está ocupando de las cosas que yo y mi familia no podemos. Confío plenamente en que Él también está trabajando dentro de ella. Mi confianza se basa en Isaías 53: 5.

A CONTINUACIÓN ESTÁN ALGUNOS DETALLES ADICIONALES DE JOHANNY PARA INFORMAR SU DECISIÓN DE HACER UNA DONACIÓN:

A mi madre le diagnosticaron recientemente cáncer de pulmón, estadio IVa. Ningún hospital público de Honduras puede brindar el tratamiento médico adecuado y el apoyo a su condición que se deteriora rápidamente. Ante esto, hemos decidido acercarnos a las instituciones de salud privadas para la hospitalización y el tratamiento de quimioterapia. Este paso, desafortunadamente, ha agotado nuestros recursos económicos para continuar pagando su quimioterapia y hospitalización.

También estoy considerando que mi madre reciba tratamientos en el extranjero. Como se indicó anteriormente, actualmente estoy buscando ayuda en una institución privada en Honduras. Sin embargo, también estoy buscando más posibilidades de tratamientos fuera de Honduras para tomar la mejor decisión. Agradecería profundamente si alguien estuviera en condiciones de ayudarme a sacar a mi mamá de mi país para recibir un mejor tratamiento.
