I am a resident physician and front line provider in New York City for the covid-19 pandemic. My colleagues and I are the ones sticking that cute little swab up your nose to test you for coronavirus, caring for you in the hospital clad with N95 masks + gowns + gloves + face shields, and making sure you have enough oxygen and breathing support. Currently ~50% of our patients have coronavirus, and our numbers grow each day.
If folks feel like they want to help the pandemic in some way, my hospital does NOT provide free lunch for us. We either pay for our own lunch by traversing the covid-ridden hospital to bring cafeteria food back to our team room or spend our copious free time preparing a lunch to bring to work (haha). This week, our attending physician has been generously paying for us to order lunch delivered to us, which is really nice because it means that we all actually take a break to eat that day, don't have to put extra time and money into figuring out food, and supports local restaurants/service industry workers. It also boosts morale for our team. I cannot emphasize enough how important this piece is... Though, this is not sustainable for a single person. $$ for lunch or K-cups/coffee for our team of ~7 people is one way people could help if they want to...
