Luna's Recovery Fund

This is our baby Luna.  (Loona Boona or Booners) She is a 7-month-old Lab, Pit, Mastiff mix.  This Saturday she was hit by a car.  A hit and run right in front of us.  We live on a very rural country road.  This car stopped when they saw Luna and as we were walking out towards the road to call her back in...they decided they were going to floor it to get away from her and they hit her and took off.  We did not get a plate.  Luna yelped and immediately ran off into the woods.  We only got a quick glimpse of her as she ran off and knew she was bleeding from the mouth.   We followed her but lost her quickly.  We searched until dark and started again at daylight.  Covering well over 200 acres.  We had such an outpouring of support from complete strangers to look for her.  It was something we have never experienced before.  A complete stranger came from 40 miles away to help us.  Some offered to come at 9pm with their own dog to help track her.  It was truly amazing and a complete restore in the faith of human kind.  She was gone for 26 hours.  We had a small amount of hope after scouring the area that is was a good sign we didn't find her and that she was well enough to run.  But we were completely exhausted between searching and not being able to sleep knowing she was out there in the woods and very unfamiliar with the land and wounded.   We were running out of daylight on day 2 when our neighbor who lives about a 1/2 mile up the road pulled in our driveway and asked if we were missing a black dog with a pink collar.  We couldn't even believe it.  We raced to his house where she was running very scared around his yard.  She even ran from us and in doing so fell down a small embankment and landed in a pile of brush.  At that point she was lifeless and we got our first glimpse at her injuries.  Heart wrenching to see her jaw almost hanging off her face.  She could not bark, she could not open her mouth to drink or eat.  She was still bleeding from the mouth BUT SHE WAS ALIVE!!!  And to us a complete miracle.   Covered in literally blood, sweat and tears we took her to the Emergency Vet clinic in Kingston, NY.  Which was one of the worst experiences.....after everything this poor puppy had been through, here we are thinking we are doing the best thing for her and she was treated with borderline inhumanity considering the circumstances and we were treated like all they want is to see how much Credit Care we could get approved for.  I immediately felt like I am failing her again.  They could do nothing.  And when we got there they told us it would be about $500 for the visit and x-rays.   Of course we are not concerned with the money at this point.....we just need answers and want to make her comfortable.  We applied for Care Credit and were approved for $1500.  I thought it very odd that the receptionist made a point to discuss the amount we were approved for with the Dr.  When we went back in to talk to the Dr. , her words exactly were, "I see you were approved for Care Credit for $1500 and well we are going to blow right through that here".   So $500 turned into $1200 just like that.  If we weren't completely at their mercy and just wanting our baby to get some sort of treatment, I would have lost it.  But here we are covered in dirt from head to toe on no sleep with our lucky to be alive dog.  So it is what it is.  We were there for 4 hours and we were the only ones there and I know why.  We heard Luna yelping in pain, mind you she can't open her mouth.  The Dr. was literally yelling at her to stop moving as she was trying to take x-rays and then something must have happened where Luna moved and hurt herself and the Dr. says, "That’s your fault".  I wanted to run back take her and leave.  But she needed help and on a Sunday, I had no clue what to do.  We were told they could do nothing and we were shoved out the door with her IV fluids in a bag, not hooked up to her.  I asked, “are we supposed to hook this up?”  They said no just give it to whoever you take her to.   The only good thing that came from this was the referral to The University of Cornell Animal Hospital.   Which is where we headed at 4:30am.  Packed the kids in the car and the pup and started out for the 4-hour drive.  They were all Rockstar’s.  The pup in pain, the kids half asleep willing to lay on the car floor for 4 hours so they could calm her.  I drove on about 4 hours of sleep in a 48-hour period.  But we did it, we got her where she needs to be and for the first time since this all happened I feel we did the right thing.  When our babies get hurt, we feel like such failures cause all we do in life is try to protect them.  Our four-legged family members are no different.  This girl was a true fighter, all night alone in the rain and cold running in fear and injured.  We knew we have to fight for her now like she fought to come back to us.  She has only been with us for 7 months but she is a protector and a part of us and didn’t deserve any of this.  Cornell University is the only hospital that can give her the surgery she will need.  She has 4 major fractures in her jaw.  She will need extensive surgery and jaw reconstruction.  The estimate is at $6000 so far.  We have exhausted most of our Care Credit at the Emergency Vet.  We are not people to ask for help, but we are truly at a loss and any little bit would help.  We have been encouraged by the many followers of Luna “our little fighter” and her story to set up something so they can help.  We are blessed beyond belief for all of the prayers alone that have gotten her to this point, alive and in pretty good health all things considered.  She is a good candidate for this surgery and they believe she will be able to have a full life.  We know we can get her there!  Let’s go Luna girl, you got this and we got you!  Luna before

This is what someone left behind.....so sick!
