Luna’s Love - help for Luna’s heart defect

First and foremost, I want to say thank you to the friends and family who have been a huge support to our little family from the beginning.

On August 1, 2018, our baby girl Luna was born via c-section in the Dominican Republic. It was never my intention to have her born in that country, however I was classified as a high-risk pregnancy due to a previous miscarriage at 18 weeks caused by an incompetent cervix. I ended up having to get a cerclage surgery done, was put on bed rest for most of my pregnancy, and was not given the “ok” to fly back to my home country of Canada.

Luna saw a pediatrician and was referred to a cardiologist due to a heart murmur when she was 2 months old. When seen by the cardiologist, she was diagnosed with a small ASD (a little hole in her heart).

In January of 2019, we took her to see a different cardiologist who diagnosed her with a large VSD (ventricular septal defect) in her heart, which would most likely require surgery. She has been on medication ever since her first diagnosis, and has been monitored closely by her pediatricians.

Thankfully, on February 15, 2019, I was able to move my family back to Canada, with the hopes of having a better life for our daughter.

On Tuesday, March 5th, we brought our 7 month old baby girl into SickKids Hospital to be seen for her heart defect. She was admitted that same day and has gone through many testings and seen many specialists within the last few days.

Unfortunately, as she was born in another country, outside of Canada, she is under the 3 month waiting period for OHIP, which means any hospital visits, testing or medicine she needs will have to come out of pocket.

While being admitted, they did confirm her large VSD, and as failure to thrive due to her low weight gain. She is currently being fed through a feeding tube, as well as through breast milk and fortified feeds, and is on daily medications.

While this has been a difficult few days, Luna continues to capture the hearts of those that meet her. She’s our brave little girl and we could not be more proud of how she is progressing.

We have been told that she will most likely require open heart surgery, however are working on her weight gain in the meantime so that when she does need the surgery, she will be as healthy and strong as possible.

I am not able to work at the moment, nor is my husband, and all of our time is going towards making sure our baby girl is as healthy and happy as possible.

We have incurred a medical bill since being admitted to the hospital, which I am graciously asking for any assistance possible, that can help with the financial burden we have incurred.

I hope that those of you that are able to assist us can, and if you are in a financial bind yourselves, please just send her prayers and well wishes, as the most important part of all of this is that Luna comes out of this thriving, healthy, and continues to get better and better day by day.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and please send Love for our little Luna
