Please help spread awareness for Luna’s "Hip-Hip Hooray Fund!" and read her story below:
“Hi friends, it’s me, Luna!
Even though I am only 2 years old, they tell me I have something called "stage 5 hip dysplasia". The orthopedic surgeon at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital says it gets very painful and my case is extremely severe. I need to get new hips by the age of 3 or I will start to lose the ability to fully walk/use my back legs. How scary!!! The bone on bone rubbing is extremely painful and soon I will not be able to do things like walk or play without being in alot of pain.
The good news is there is a surgery to fix me! The surgery I need is called Femoral Head Ostectomy. FHO is a surgical procedure for dogs where the ball of the hip joint (the femoral head) is removed to relieve pain and improve mobility. Once I heal from the surgery and finish physical therapy, I will be pain free!!
The bad news is that it's not covered by pet insurance and is very, very expensive. In addition to the surgical specialist visits and x-rays I have already gotten, my surgery will cost around $12,000. Wow is right... who knew hips were so expensive!!
My mom is working extra hard, working long hours and extra shifts at the hospital to try and get me these hips so I don't lose the ability to walk. If you could help in ANY way, both me, my mom, and my brother Remy would deeply appreciate it. Raising awareness, spreading the word, donating to the fund, sending prayers... anything and everything helps!
My greatest joy in life is fetching the ball, chasing after my brother, and playing in the water. With these new hips, I'll be able to make a full recovery and have working legs for the rest of my life!!!”
How Remy & Luna Found Each Other (and Why They Need Your Help)
In June 2021, I adopted Remy (Luna’s brother) through the Golden Retriever Rescue Association. He was the sweetest boy and spent his early days alongside my parents’ golden retriever until I eventually moved out on my own. That’s when I realized—Remy was lonely and needed a fur companion.
At the time, Remy was going to doggy daycare regularly, and one day the daycare staff reached out to me. They knew someone—a high school acquaintance from Stockton—who was looking to rehome her 7-month-old golden retriever, Luna. It felt like fate.
When Remy met Luna, it was love at first sight. They instantly bonded in a way that felt deeper than coincidence. They even looked so alike that I became curious and decided to run a DNA test on both of them. The results blew me away: Remy and Luna share the exact same parents. They were born two years apart, from different litters—but they’re full siblings. Somehow, across space and time, these two found their way back to each other. It felt like destiny.
But this beautiful reunion came with a heartbreaking reality: Remy and Luna are both products of backyard breeding. While their bond is magical, the circumstances behind their birth are not. Backyard breeding—where dogs are bred rapidly and irresponsibly without regard for genetics or health—is not only unethical, it’s dangerous. It often leads to inbreeding and the spread of painful, expensive, and lifelong health conditions in dogs.
Sadly, both Remy and Luna are now facing the consequences of this. Luna, in particular, has been diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia—a genetic condition that causes her daily pain and limits her mobility. She needs surgery to live a pain-free, active life.
This GoFundMe was created to help cover the cost of Luna’s hip surgery and ongoing treatment. Every dollar brings us closer to giving her the healthy, happy life she deserves.
Our goal isn’t just to raise money—it’s also to raise awareness about the dangers of backyard breeding. Luna and Remy’s story is proof that even when love brings two souls together, irresponsible breeding practices can leave a trail of heartbreak. Please consider donating, sharing our story, or simply learning more about how to adopt responsibly.
Luna has a long road ahead—but with your help, it’s one filled with hope, healing, and a lot more tail wags.
With gratitude, Laura, Remy & Luna
