Luna and Junipers Hospital Journey

On Thursday September 27th we went in for early induction labor due to gestational hypertension and baby Juniper growing very fast, making it a higher risk pregnancy. During 4 days of labor Luna received 3 missed epidurals and was denied caesarean section surgery after requesting it multiple times, she ended up birthing Juniper naturally on Sunday; causing more complications to both Luna and Juniper. Luna lost over 2200 ml of blood(typical is 500), and a vacuum was used on Junipers head (which she was too big for), causing a subgaleal hemorrhage and shoulder dystocia. During this time the umbilical chord ruptured, and Juniper was twisted and pulled out the rest of the way by her head.

They immediately took Juniper out to NICU and manually removed the placenta from Luna. They told us that Juniper had broken her clavicle, and that her right lung and ribcage were collapsed in and not inflating. Juniper received an umbilical IV as well as one in her hand and was given an oxygen mask. They placed an IV in Lunas left arm for antibiotics, but it immediately infiltrated her vein and started pumping her arm full of fluids. No offer for a blood transfusion was given to Luna.

The next morning a NICU doctor that goes to multiple hospitals said that Juniper needed to be transferred to a hospital that had a Level 4 NICU unit (the highest level of neonatal care).  She was rushed to the UofM children's hospital followed shortly by Luna. Upon arrival Luna was given an MRI and an emergency blood transfusion, it was becoming more and more difficult for her to walk. Juniper was also given a blood transfusion and being closely monitored by two nurses. The next morning a neurosurgeon and his team rushed into Lunas room, stating that there were hematomas pressing on her spinal chord from the missed epidurals that were causing her to start going into a paralytic state. Emergency spinal surgery was needed immediately to stop the progression. They took Luna into the OR and scraped away parts of her spine so that they could remove the hematomas.

Meanwhile over in the NICU baby Junipers bilirubin levels had skyrocketed and she was placed on phototherapy to try to break down the excess blood, at this time she was starting to eat, and not taking all her food from the umbilical IV. Luna was out of surgery and told that her recovery was 8 weeks before she was allowed to lift anything over 10 pounds, and 6 months to a year before normalcy.

What we envisioned as a couple days in the hospital birthing has turned into almost 2 weeks of intensive care and emergency surgeries, due to the fact that Luna's recovery is so long, I will be taking a lot more time off of work than initially planned for. Also the hospital bills are astronomically higher than what we had planned for.

Thank you for taking time away from your day to read our story. We appreciate anything that you can spare, and will be using all money received for medical and household bills.
                                             with love,
                                                  Luna, Juniper and Jordan
