Hi friends!
Making this to come together to make a little miracle happen for someone that has touched the lives of just about everyone she meets. Her name is Lulu, she is a 78 year old Oaxacan native who moved to Tulum, Mexico about 20 years ago in search of work. Besides cooking delicious meals for hundreds of people throughout the years, Lulu has easily became many people’s second mom here in Tulum, including mine.
On a daily basis, Lulu teaches me and other young women around her how to make love, kindness and forgiveness the center of life. To say that this woman gives her unconditional love and wisdom in ways that shift one’s worldview in the most incredible manner is an understatement. Although Lulu has been working her whole life nonstop, the reality of her path is the same of many other single mothers in Mexico: they work their whole lives without the opportunity to save for retirement or ever be able to have a home that they call their own.
Lulu has a 9 yr old granddaughter, Sophie, whose parents left her with Lulu without any explanation. Sophie is simply a warrior. She was born premature at 6 months, which left her completely blind in one of her eyes from the light in the incubation process. Sophie solely relies on her right eye to see this world, yet the damage in her retina from the incubation requires her to get a new eye prosthesis every 3-4 years, which costs $22,000 pesos ($1,150 USD), all of which Lulu & Sophie will have to figure out how to pay on their own + the fees to travel to Mexico City to see a specialist.
I make this gofundme with a heavy heart knowing that now more than ever, the possibility of Sophie having to take on the world on her very own is a reality to prepare for. Lulu has a condition that almost caused her life 8 years ago and unfortunately began feeling sick again about a week ago. During a heart to heart conversation between Lulu and I, Lulu accepted the fact that her time may be coming and she is simply tired. Lulu had to put a pause to her own medical treatments as the the pandemic limited the access to the public medical services she needs.
I have had the pleasure of spending time with Sophie, who is incredibly smart, kind, curious and active. The thought of Sophie being without Lulu and not getting the medical treatments she needs due to the lack of financial support breaks my heart beyond words. While getting to know Lulu’s story, she mentioned (with tears in her eyes) that her one and only fear is leaving Sophie with no one behind as it has been just them two taking care of each other for the past 7 years.
I asked Lulu what her biggest dream was and she said going back to her hometown in Oaxaca and buying a home that she can leave for Sophie. The downpayment for Lulu to purchase the land for her very own home is $135,000 pesos, which is equivalent to about $7,000 USD
My hope with this gofundme is to give a gift of a lifetime to a woman who has given so much of herself to everyone around her, and to give an opportunity to a little girl who has smiled through all the curve balls life has thrown her way at such a young age. Your support can absolutely transform the lives of Lulu and Sophie, which will impact the generations of Mexican women that will come after them. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for taking the time to learn about their story and support for these incredible women.
