Hi, my name is James, and this is really hard for me to write.

Now, my mother Lulu, our pets, and I are homeless. Not because we were negligent. Not because we didn't try our best. But because we were illegally evicted from our home, and everything came crashing down so fast we barely had time to breathe, let alone make plans.

We were given just a couple of days to pack up a lifetime. Legally, we should’ve had more time, but we didn’t. The landlord and the real estate agent gave us the runaround, mocked us, and left us scrambling. In the rush, my mum focused on getting my things and the pets out. She didn’t even pack most of her own clothes or shoes. That’s just who she is—always putting everyone else before herself.

Now, every night, we sleep in our car with our three dogs. Our cats are in a temporary shelter we can barely afford. We’re trying to keep up with the cost of their care, mum’s medication, and a storage unit for the few belongings we managed to save… but it’s all piling up, and we’re barely hanging on. We go days barely eating so we can make sure the animals are okay.

We’ve been out here for three weeks now. It’s hot. It’s exhausting. And to be honest—it’s scary. My mum’s health has taken a huge hit. She has a diabetic wasting disease, and since being on the street, she’s gotten worse. She’s weak, tired, and in pain every day, and I’m terrified of what could happen if we don’t get out of this situation soon.

The hardest part? We had no other choice but to give up the place we've always known. We've made the painful decision to leave Melbourne and start anew in another state. There's just too much pain here. Too many bad memories. We want a real chance to heal, to rebuild, and finally have a place we can call home again.
